Biochar derived from spent mushroom substrate reduced N2O emissions with lower water content but increased CH4 emissions under flooded condition from fertilized soils in Camellia oleifera plantations

Xintong Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that biochar feedstocks have different effects on CH4 and N2O emissions in soils with different water contents. MS biochar performed better in reducing N2O emissions compared to FS biochar, but increased CH4 emissions. Additional research is needed on the interactions between biochar, water content, and soil GHG emissions.

Risk assessment of rainstorm disasters in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao greater Bay area of China during 1990-2018

Yujie Wang et al.

Summary: With climate change and urbanization, the frequency and intensity of rainstorm disasters in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) have increased significantly. The risks of rainstorm disasters are high and very high in Zhuhai, Zhongshan, Dongguan, Jiangmen, and Shenzhen. The increase in population, gross domestic product, built-up areas, and decrease in vegetation coverage have contributed to the higher frequency of rainstorm disasters. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for local governments to improve strategies for rainstorm disaster prevention and mitigation.

Soil microbial biomass, activities and diversity in Southern Italy areas chronically exposed to trace element input from industrial and agricultural activities

R. Marzaioli et al.

Summary: High concentrations of trace elements in the soil can have toxic effects on the microbial community. This study evaluated the impact of trace element concentrations in soils exposed to industrial and agricultural activities on the soil microbial community. The results showed that the measured trace element concentrations did not cause toxic effects on the microbial community, although chronic exposure to different patterns of trace element contamination may have led to site-specific adaptive responses in microbial populations.

Water level regulates the rhizosphere priming effect on SOM decomposition of peatland soil

Wenchao Yan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the role of the rhizosphere priming effect (RPE) in peatlands by measuring the CO2 emission rate and isotope of C-13 in different water levels. The results showed that RPE significantly affected the decomposition of soil organic matter and varied among water levels. Positive RPE was observed at higher water levels, enhancing soil carbon accumulation, while negative RPE was observed at lower water levels, threatening the carbon sink.

Applying both biochar and phosphobacteria enhances Vigna mungo L. growth and yield in acid soils by increasing soil pH, moisture content, microbial growth and P availability

P. Kannan et al.

Summary: The combined application of biochar and phosphobacteria can enhance black gram production by improving phosphorus availability and increasing yield in rain-fed low pH Alfisols. Biochar plays a crucial role in reducing soil penetration resistance and increasing soil moisture retention.

Resilience of methane cycle and microbial functional genes to drought and flood in an alkaline wetland: A metagenomic analysis

Fengqin Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of the CH4 cycle in alkaline wetlands, using Zhalong wetland as an example. The research found that methanogenesis is quite resilient to drought, with syntrophic acetogenesis and aceticlastic methanogenesis as dominant pathways. The study also revealed the role of microbial functional genes in surviving drought and flood periods in alkaline wetlands.

Summary: Nitrification inhibitors can significantly reduce N2O emissions from urine patches, with DCD showing the most effective results. However, research is needed to establish acceptable maximum residue levels of NIs in soil, plant, and animal products, and optimize physical mixing between NIs and urine patches for livestock grazed systems.
