Efficient removal of organic compounds from shale gas wastewater by coupled ozonation and moving-bed-biofilm submerged membrane bioreactor

Xinyu Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that the coupled system of MBBF-SMBR showed higher efficiency and removal rates for organics in shale gas wastewater compared to SMBR, with lower total membrane resistance in MBBF-SMBR system. Enhanced gene allocation for membrane transport and nitrogen metabolism was identified in MBBF-SMBR biofilm, indicating significant industrial application potential for organics removal from SGW.

Summary: This study aims to choose the best waste treatment method to address the long-term impacts of micropollutants on the environment and human health. A customizable methodology was used to analyze and compare different waste treatment technologies based on environmental, technical, and economic criteria. The results show that activated carbon adsorption yields the best results when the spent carbon is reactivated, and membrane filtration improves water quality when reused.

Facile preparation of antifouling nanofiltration membrane by grafting zwitterions for reuse of shale gas wastewater

Minli Hu et al.

Summary: This study successfully achieved anti-fouling property against organic foulants by grafting poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate) onto the surface of a nanofiltration membrane. The PSBMA-grafted NF membrane showed high performance in treating shale gas wastewater, including improved flux stability, increased removal of protein-like and humus-like organic matters. The study suggests that the proposed anti-fouling zwitterionic membranes have potential for industrial applications in the on-site reuse of SGW.

Organic compounds in Weiyuan shale gas produced water: Identification, detection and rejection by ultrafiltration-reverse osmosis processes

Yu Sun et al.

Summary: The study focused on the quantification of organic pollutants in flowback and produced water to design effective treatment strategies and predict environmental toxicity in unconventional energy production. The analysis of produced water from the Weiyuan shale gas play in China revealed oxygen-containing organic compounds as the dominant type, with highly unsaturated phenolic and aliphatic compounds identified as main components. Advanced membrane treatment achieved significant removal rates for compounds such as dimethylbenzylamine, but low molecular weight chemicals like DMBA still posed potential environmental risks even after treatment.

Green aerogel adsorbent for removal of organic compounds in shale gas wastewater: High-performance tuning and adsorption mechanism

Yuanhui Liu et al.

Summary: The study focused on improving the adsorption performance of porous biochar aerogel (PBA) for removing organic compounds from shale gas flowback and produced water (SGFPW). By optimizing the tuning of PBAs, a high adsorption removal rate and capacity were achieved, surpassing other carbon adsorbents for SGFPW treatment. Analysis of organic compound characterization and PBAs' physicochemical properties revealed an efficient adsorption mechanism based on electron-donor-acceptor interaction, hydrophobic effect, and hydrogen-bond formation.
