Enrichment of primary macronutrients in biochar for sustainable agriculture: A review

Adnan Asad Karim et al.

Summary: Macronutrient-enriched biochars have the potential to recycle nutrients from waste, improve soil fertility, reduce fertilizer consumption, and promote sustainable agriculture. The recent focus has been on exploring different methods for producing macronutrient-enriched biochar fertilizers, and there is a need for further scientific understanding and advancement in this field. This review provides crucial information about the production and use of nutrients-enriched biochars, as well as their potential challenges and future perspectives. The main focus of these biochars is on nitrogen and phosphorus, and they can enrich up to 10%, 15.32%, and 25.85% of total N, P, and K respectively. However, more research is needed on the bio-labile and plant available fractions of these nutrients. Overall, the prospects of nutrients-enriched biochars for sustainable agriculture have gained momentum, and further engineered biochars hold great potential for specific soil-plant-environment systems.

An overview on engineering the surface area and porosity of biochar

Lijian Leng et al.

Summary: Surface area and porosity are crucial physical properties of biochar that significantly impact its applications, with biomass composition and pyrolysis temperature being major influencing factors. Activation, particularly through chemical means, is the most effective way to enhance biochar surface area and porosity, while other treatment methods like carbonaceous materials coating and ball milling can also contribute to improvement. Future research should focus on developing treatment technologies to simultaneously enhance the functionality and porous structure of biochar.

Green and simple approach for low-cost bioproducts preparation and CO2 capture

Gabriela Duran-Jimenez et al.

Summary: This study introduces a simple and fast microwave processing method for the preparation of bio-products without the use of catalysts or chemical activation. The biochar produced displayed good CO2 capture capacity, gas selectivity, fast adsorption kinetics, and high reusability. Higher microwave energies were found to enhance bio-oil yield and promote the formation of specific compounds, while trace levels of H-2 and CH4 were identified in the bio-gas.
