Exposure Levels and Contributing Factors of Various Arsenic Species and Their Health Effects on Korean Adults

Seul-Gi Lee et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the arsenic exposure level, contributing factors, and health effects in Korean adults. The results showed that seafood and rice are major sources of organic/inorganic arsenic exposure in Korean adults. Seafood intake was positively correlated with inorganic arsenic, DMA, and AsB, while rice intake was positively correlated with inorganic arsenic and its metabolites. Additionally, malondialdehyde and c-peptide levels were significantly associated with urinary concentrations of various arsenic species.

Summary: This study found a negative association between BMI and MMA% and a positive association with %DMA in females in Bangladesh, but no significant association was observed in males. These associations were attenuated after adjustment for plasma choline. Further research is needed to determine the causal relationship between BMI and As species and their impact on As-related health outcomes.

Monomethylated arsenic was the Major methylated arsenic in Red blood cells of acute promyelocytic leukemia patients treated with arsenic trioxide

Sixun Guo et al.

Summary: Arsenic trioxide has been successfully used in the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia, and this study established a method to determine arsenic species in red blood cells, finding that the concentration of DMA is highest in plasma while MMA is the most predominant methylated arsenic in RBCs. High affinity of MMA with human Hb contributes to the accumulation of arsenic in RBCs of APL patients.
