Sustainable treatment and nutrient recovery from leafy waste through vermicomposting

Monika Mago et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the vermicomposting potential of two cruciferous vegetables' residual biomasses under laboratory conditions. The results showed that vermicomposting led to a decrease in pH and Total Organic Carbon, an increase in Electrical Conductivity and ash content. Nutrient levels such as Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen, Total Available Phosphorus, and Total Potassium also increased. The FT-IR spectra indicated decomposition of organic compounds and the stability of the vermicompost. Additionally, the cauliflower residual biomass exhibited better decomposition efficiency compared to the cabbage residual biomass.

Detoxification of coir pith through refined vermicomposting engaging Eudrilus eugeniae

Mani Jayakumar et al.

Summary: Coir pith, a hazardous coir industrial waste, was subjected to 50 days of vermicomposting with Eudrilus eugeniae using different combinations of nitrogenous legume plant Gliricidia sepium and cattle dung, following 21 days of precomposting with Pleurotus sajor-caju spawn. The vermicompost exhibited increased electrical conductivity, total NPK, and calcium, as well as decreased organic matter, total organic carbon, C/N ratio, C/P ratio, and total phenolic content. The activity of dehydrogenase, urease, and cellulase reached its peak at 30 days of vermicomposting. The stability and maturity of the vermicompost were confirmed through phytotoxicity studies, C/N ratio, and enzyme activities. The 2:3:1 ratio of coir pith, Gliricidia sepium, and cow dung proved to be an effective combination for nutrient-rich vermicompost production (N: 2.43%; P: 0.92%; K: 2.09%). The total phenolic content decreased during vermicomposting, with the lowest final content observed in the 2:3:1 combination (21.26 mg/g GAE compared to the initial level of 105.56 mg/g GAE). The concentration of total phenol contents was inversely related to the germination index of Brassica juncea, indicating its potential role in phytotoxicity. The growth and fecundity of Eudrilus eugeniae in the 2:3:1 combination demonstrated the acceptability and rapid decomposition of coir pith substrate into vermifertilizer.

Summary: This study investigated the biotransformation of elephant and cow dung using the earthworm Eudrilus eugeniae. It was found that the treatment with a 1:1 ratio of elephant and cow dung (T3) had the highest NPK content and nutrient recovery efficiency. The vermicompost produced was found to be free of phytotoxicity and supported plant growth effectively after two cycles.
