Ozone pollution control strategies examined by Empirical Kinetics Modeling Approach over the Beaumont-Port Arthur region in Texas of USA

Sijie Ge et al.

Summary: Ground-level ozone, formed by reactions of nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds in sunlight, is harmful to human health and the environment. This study used Empirical Kinetics Modeling Approach and comprehensive air quality modeling to examine the effects of VOCs and NOx abatement on ozone concentrations in a concentrated industrial region in Texas, USA. Results indicated that NOx abatement is more effective than VOCs abatement for reducing ozone concentrations in the BPA area, which is classified as NOx-sensitive for ozone pollution.

Modeling of the health impacts of ambient ozone pollution in China and India

Lina Liu et al.

Summary: Ground-level ozone pollution in China and India has become a pressing environmental issue, leading to significant negative health impacts and mortality. Despite similar ozone concentrations in both countries, China has a lower ozone-attributable mortality rate compared to India, primarily due to factors such as population size, aging population, baseline mortality rate, and ambient ozone exposure. This study provides valuable insights for policymakers and enhances understanding of ozone-related health burdens in the two countries at a provincial level.

A review on methodology in O3-NOx-VOC sensitivity study

Chunqiong Liu et al.

Summary: Studying the sensitivity of O3 formation to its precursors has advanced in the past decades with the use of nonlinear methods that reveal emergent properties. Incorporating these emergent properties into modern models is essential for accurately assessing O3 formation under combined air pollution environments. The scaling property of coupling correlation detected in real observations could help test and improve the simulation performance of modern models.

Understanding the impact of meteorology on ozone in 334 cities of China

Chengyuan Hu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the characteristics of O3 pollution in China and identified the significant impact of meteorological conditions on its variations. By using GAMs, models were developed to predict O3 concentration for different cities, with temperature, relative humidity, and sunshine hours being the top influencing factors. The study revealed the non-linear influence of meteorological factors on O3 pollution, which was significantly improved when considering the interaction between variables.

Summary: A canister-based sampling method combined with GC-MS analysis was used to detect ethylene oxide and 75 other volatile organic compounds in ambient air. The method, based on US EPA Method TO-15A, showed high accuracy and precision, allowing for faster analysis of ethylene oxide and other VOCs.

Effects of Anthropogenic and Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds on Los Angeles Air Quality

Shan Gu et al.

Summary: The study highlights the significant impact of future urban greening programs that increase biogenic VOC emissions on urban air quality, offsetting the benefits of reducing anthropogenic VOC emissions. Therefore, urban greening projects need to consider both anthropogenic and biogenic VOC contributions to secondary pollution, and should choose vegetation types with low VOC emissions to prevent further degradation of urban air quality.
