Three-dimensional nature of summertime aerosols over South Asia

Abhishek Singh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the three-dimensional climatology of South Asian summertime aerosols using satellite observations and reanalysis dataset. The results show high aerosol optical depth in the region, with distinct spatial distribution of aerosol sub-types. Mineral dust, smoke, and urban aerosols are the dominant aerosol sub-types.

Insights into size-segregated particulate chemistry and sources in urban environment over central Indo-Gangetic Plain

Nandita Singh et al.

Summary: The study found that size-segregated fine and coarse particulates in an urban environment have different sources and properties, with PM2.1 being dominated by secondary aerosols and PM>2.1 being enriched in metals. The neutralization of particulate acidity by ammonium showed different characteristics in the two particulate types, with significant seasonal variations.

Changing patterns in aerosol vertical distribution over South and East Asia

M. Venkat Ratnam et al.

Summary: Satellite observations have shown a rapid change in aerosol vertical distribution over South and East Asia, with decreasing trend in boundary layer aerosol concentrations over India and a consistent decreasing trend over China. A decrease in Aerosol Optical Depth observed in northwest India is related to an increase in precipitation leading to vegetation growth. Long-term oscillations like QBO, ENSO and solar cycle significantly influence aerosol concentrations.

Association of aerosols, trace gases and black carbon with mortality in an urban pollution hotspot over central Indo-Gangetic Plain

Nidhi Singh et al.

Summary: The study found that the short-term exposure to aerosols and trace gases in a typical urban pollution hotspot over central Indo-Gangetic Plain can significantly impact all-cause mortality. Adjusting for factors like temperature and humidity, the research provides important insights into the effects of air pollution on human health.

Aerosol Climatology Over South and Southeast Asia: Aerosol Types, Vertical Profile, and Source Fields

Tirthankar Banerjee et al.

Summary: Aerosol climatology over South and Southeast Asia during typical haze period shows differences in AOD distribution, aerosol types, and characteristics of different locations, with fine and UV-absorbing aerosols dominating over South Asia and weak UV-absorbing fine aerosols prevailing in Southeast Asia. Urban hotspots in both regions exhibit a minor increasing trend in AOD, while dust aerosols dominate in Karachi and smoke aerosols dominate across most of the Indo-Gangetic plain and Southeast Asia.

Interactions of Asian mineral dust with Indian summer monsoon: Recent advances and challenges

Qinjian Jin et al.

Summary: The Indian summer monsoon is crucial for providing the majority of annual rainfall to the Indian subcontinent and affecting over a quarter of the world's population. Asia is also a significant source of dust, and the interactions between dust and the monsoon are increasingly studied. Dust particles can modulate monsoon circulation and precipitation, while the monsoon can in turn influence dust emissions and deposition.

Aerosol characteristics from earth observation systems: A comprehensive investigation over South Asia (2000?2019)

Alaa Mhawish et al.

Summary: The study found an increasing trend in aerosol loading over South Asia from 2000 to 2019, with the highest aerosol loading observed during the monsoon season. Natural aerosol emissions and local anthropogenic emissions were identified as the main drivers of high AOD during monsoon and pre-monsoon seasons. High humidity during the monsoon season favored the hygroscopic growth of particles, leading to higher AOD values. The high spatial resolutions of MODIS/MAIAC and MISR aerosol products enabled the identification of previously unobserved aerosol hotspots.

Sources, Composition, and Mixing State of Submicron Particulates over the Central Indo-Gangetic Plain

Nandita Singh et al.

Summary: An analysis of submicron particulates collected in an urban environment over the central Indo-Gangetic Plain in South Asia from 2015 to 2018 showed high concentrations of particulates during winter and post-monsoon seasons. The particulates were found to be metal-enriched, with sulfate being the most abundant ion contributing to particulate mass. Water-soluble ions accounted for one-third of particulate mass, mainly comprised of secondary ions.

Investigation of near-global daytime boundary layer height using high-resolution radiosondes: first results and comparison with ERA5, MERRA-2, JRA-55, and NCEP-2 reanalyses

Summary: This study establishes a near-global climatology of BLH using high-resolution radiosonde measurements and compares it with four reanalysis datasets. It finds significant spatial and temporal variations in daytime BLH, with ERA5 showing the most reliable underestimation compared to radiosonde measurements. Other reanalysis products may introduce additional uncertainties with larger underestimations.

Summary: This study utilized CALIOP data to investigate the climatological distribution and trends of tropospheric type-dependent aerosols globally from 2007 to 2019. The results show contrasting vertical distribution patterns of AEC over land and ocean, different contributions of PBL and FT to global TAOD, and correlations between meteorological factors and TAOD.
