Isotope Effects on the Vaporization of Organic Compounds from an Aqueous Solution-Insight from Experiment and Computations

Michal Rostkowski et al.

Summary: This study investigated the isotope fractionation of benzene, trimethylamine, and chloroform, revealing different directions and magnitudes of fractionation. Computational analysis showed that the isotope effect arises from contributions of various natures and extents, with influences from intramolecular vibrations weakening and complexation with surrounding water molecules. The study also found that dispersion played a dominant role in benzene's stabilization patterns, while electrostatics dominated for chloroform and trimethylamine.

Mass-Transfer-Limited Biodegradation at Low Concentrations.Evidence from Reactive Transport Modeling of Isotope Profiles in a Bench-Scale Aquifer

Fengchao Sun et al.

Summary: Research shows that isotope fractionation decreases significantly when organic pollutant concentrations fall below a certain level, indicating that membrane transfer is slow relative to enzyme turnover. By using a reactive transport model, it is possible to identify mass transfer limitations in biodegradation, especially at low concentrations.

Magnitude of Diffusion- and Transverse Dispersion-Induced Isotope Fractionation of Organic Compounds in Aqueous Systems

Fengchao Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that isotope fractionation caused by aqueous diffusion and dispersion for organic contaminants at natural isotopic abundance is very small, with unclear correlation to isotopologue mass changes. In field scenarios, the additional uncertainty from aqueous diffusion or dispersion may impact the instrumental uncertainties on carbon or nitrogen isotope values by up to +/- 1%.

Sorption- and diffusion-induced isotopic fractionation in chloroethenes

Summary: This study investigates isotopic fractionation of groundwater contaminants, finding that diffusive isotopic fractionation and sorptive isotopic fractionation can have significant effects on isotopic enrichment. Diffusive fractionation is shown to have a stronger influence on chlorine isotopologues than on hydrogen isotopologues.
