Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Contaminated Soil and Groundwater at Airports: A Canadian Case Study

Min Liu et al.

Summary: The occurrence of 93 classes of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) was investigated at AFFF-impacted sites of Canadian airports. PFAS profiles, loads, and spatial trends were site-specific, influenced by AFFF use history. Zwitterionic and cationic compounds composed a large percentage in surface soil samples but a relatively low percentage in groundwater samples. This study provides critical data to support developing new priority analyte lists and integrating TOP assay for comprehensive PFAS monitoring at AFFF-impacted sites.

Concentration profiles of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in major sources to the environment

Kavitha Dasu et al.

Summary: The review of literature on PFAS concentrations and composition from different sources showed that direct and indirect sources have varying levels of PFAS contamination. Groundwater, landfill leachates, and aqueous film-forming foam were identified as major sources of high concentrations of PFAS.

Occurrence and fate of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in urban waters of New Zealand

Swadhina Priyadarshini Lenka et al.

Summary: Limited information on PFAS occurrence in aquatic matrices of countries without PFAS manufacturing, like New Zealand, was found. PFAS were detected in all wastewater samples in the study, suggesting incomplete removal in wastewater treatment plants. Further research is needed to understand the transformation processes and sources of PFAS in urban water systems.

The occurrence, distribution, and risks of PFAS at AFFF-impacted sites in Finland

Jussi Reinikainen et al.

Summary: PFAS are persistent chemicals that are widely present in the environment due to their use in fire suppression. Our evaluation in Finland found that restricted or substituted PFAS still pose long-term risks to the environment. The most significant risks are associated with aquatic ecosystems, fish consumption, and groundwater use.

Summary: In this study, a bacterial strain capable of utilizing 6:2 FTS as a sulfur source was isolated and analyzed for its genomic and proteomic characteristics. The findings provide insights into the biodegradation of 6:2 FTS by the Actinobacterium D. aurantiaca J3, informing the fate of PFAS in the environment.

Legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in sediments from the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea: Occurrence, source apportionment and environmental risk assessment

Hiufang Zhong et al.

Summary: The study revealed the presence of various PFAS in marine sediments of the Yellow Sea and East China Sea, with traditional long-chain PFAS being the dominant pollutants. Emerging PFAS such as HFPO-DA were also detected, suggesting a shift in PFAS production. The potential low to medium risks mainly stem from industrial activities like metal plating plants.

Different transport behaviors and mechanisms of perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in saturated porous media

Yingna Xing et al.

Summary: The study found that PFOA had higher mobility than PFOS, and divalent cations could inhibit their transport by increasing the nonequilibrium interactions between them and the sand. pH had a smaller influence on PFOA migration, while decreasing pH significantly inhibited the transport of PFOS.

Legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in multi-media around a landfill in China: Implications for the usage of PFASs alternatives

Chang Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated various PFAS in groundwater, surface water, and sediment samples near a valley-type landfill operating for over 20 years, revealing significant differences in PFAS concentrations in different locations and media, as well as varying partitioning behaviors of PFCAs in the water-sediment system. The increasing trend of short-chain analogues and emerging alternatives in surface water, along with negligible health risks of PFOS and PFOA via the drinking groundwater exposure pathway, were observed. Further comprehensive studies on the human health risks of PFAS from landfills are deemed essential.

Challenges and Current Status of the Biological Treatment of PFAS-Contaminated Soils

Esmaeil Shahsavari et al.

Summary: This review examined the current challenge and status of bioremediation of PFAs in soils, highlighting the potential of biodegradation as a cost-effective and large-scale strategy, although limited information is available regarding the mechanisms of PFAS degradation. New technologies in microbial ecology have the potential to advance our understanding of PFAS biodegradation and support the development of robust bioremediation technologies.

Wonjin Sim et al.

Summary: A nationwide monitoring of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in soils across different land-use types in South Korea was conducted, with higher PFAS concentrations found in soil samples from industrial complexes and landfills. The main contaminants identified in the soils were PFOS, PFOA, and PFCAs with carbon chain lengths between C9 and C12.
