Methane formation driven by reactive oxygen species across all living organisms

Leonard Ernst et al.

Summary: This study reveals that CH4 formation in Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli is triggered by free iron and reactive oxygen species (ROS), with methyl radicals derived from organic compounds with sulfur or nitrogen bonds serving as key intermediates. The findings also suggest that many other model organisms, including several human cell lines, show enhanced CH4 production in response to oxidative stress inducers.

Assessing biogeographic survey gaps in bacterial diversity knowledge: A global synthesis of freshwaters

Allison M. Veach et al.

Summary: Freshwaters, which make up only 0.8% of Earth's surface area, harbor a disproportionately high level of biodiversity, with more than 10% of known plant and animal species. Despite advances in molecular techniques for studying microbial diversity, research on global microbial biogeography in freshwaters remains limited. Surveys of microbial diversity have been primarily conducted in North America, central and western Europe, and Southeast Asia, with gaps in coverage in regions such as the tropics and the Arctic. Future efforts should aim to fill these gaps and broaden the understanding of global diversity patterns.
