Metal and metalloid pollution in shelf sediments from the Gulf of C′adiz (Southwest Spain): Long-lasting effects of a historical mining area

V. Besada et al.

Summary: This study assessed the metal pollution status of the Gulf of C' adiz by measuring metal and metalloid concentrations in surface sediments. The distribution of metals such as Cu, Cd, Zn, Hg, and As was mainly associated with historical mining activities, while Ni, Cr, and Mn showed a different distribution pattern explained by geochemical factors. The comparison of metal concentrations with sediment quality guidelines indicated adverse ecological effects in a specific area. These results highlight the ongoing issue of metal pollution in the Gulf of C' adiz.

Trace Metal Residues in Marine Mussels: A Global Survey

Maximiliano Cledon et al.

Summary: This study investigated metal pollution levels in Mytilus mussel species from various regions with different levels of anthropogenic pressures. Results showed that high-impact areas had elevated concentrations of zinc, lead, nickel, and arsenic, while medium-impact areas had higher levels of copper and silver. Low-impact areas generally had lower metal concentrations.

Characterization of classes of mollusks in the East Atlantic according to their element content

Indira Delgado-Suarez et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations of elements in samples from six species of mollusks, finding that benthic organisms had the highest concentration of elements, while the Cephalopoda class had the highest Cd and Pb content. The values obtained were compared with studies from other regions to assess the environmental state of the Atlantic Ocean.

Limpets as bioindicators of element pollution in the coasts of Tenerife (Canary Islands)

Enrique Lozano-Bilbao et al.

Summary: It has been found that Patella aspera and Patella candei crenata show statistical differences in their element content in contaminated areas of Tenerife, and the former is particularly sensitive to Cd and Cu concentrations, making it a good bioindicator of marine pollution.

The influence of natural vs anthropogenic factors on trace metal(loid) levels in the Mussel Watch programme: Two decades of monitoring in the Spanish Mediterranean sea

Juan Santos-Echeandia et al.

Summary: The study monitored trace metals and metalloids along the Spanish Mediterranean coast from 1993 to 2013 and found that Pb concentrations significantly decreased over time at most stations, confirming the effectiveness of regulatory measures under European legislation.

Sea snail (Hexaplex trunculus) and sea cucumber (Holothuria polii) as potential sentinel species for organic pollutants and trace metals in coastal ecosystems

Victor M. Leon et al.

Summary: The study characterized the seasonal bioaccumulation of trace metals, PAHs, PCBs, and OCPs in sea snail and sea cucumber from Mar Menor lagoon, with the highest concentrations of p,p'-DDE detected in certain areas and biomagnification factors higher than 5 for some compounds.
