The diversity of endogenous viral elements in insects

Clement Gilbert et al.

Summary: The study revealed the diversity of viral sequences integrated into insect genomes, which can be assigned to different families of RNA and single-stranded DNA viruses. Research on these endogenous viral elements has provided important insights into insect-virus interactions, highlighting the discovery of a new form of adaptive antiviral immunity. The diversity of insect EVE is expected to continue increasing with the sequencing of new insect genomes and exogenous viruses, making paleovirology a dynamic research field in the future.

Characterization of a Novel Mitovirus of the Sand Fly Lutzomyia longipalpis Using Genomic and Virus-Host Interaction Signatures

Paula Fonseca et al.

Summary: Hematophagous insects, such as sand flies, are major reservoirs of infectious agents due to their close contact with vertebrate hosts. A novel mitovirus, Lul-MV-1, was identified in Lutzomyia longipalpis, suggesting sand flies may serve as hosts for this virus. Molecular analysis showed similarities between Lul-MV-1 and mitochondrial DNA of invertebrate hosts, and the virus-derived small RNA profile indicated activation of the siRNA pathway, further supporting sand flies as potential hosts for this virus.

Complete genome sequence of a novel mitovirus associated with Lagenaria siceraria

Xia Chen et al.

Summary: The study reported a novel mitovirus, Lagenaria siceraria associated mitovirus 1 (LsaMV1), isolated from tissues of bottle gourd. The full-length genome sequence of LsaMV1 is 3,098 nucleotides long and encodes a putative RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Homology searches and phylogenetic analysis indicated that LsaMV1 belongs to a new species in the family Mitoviridae.
