Genus-Specific Carbon Fixation Activity Measurements Reveal Distinct Responses to Oxygen among Hydrothermal Vent Campylobacteria

Jesse McNichol et al.

Summary: This study investigated the activity of three genera of Campylobacteria under different experimental conditions using radiocarbon incubations. The results showed that all three genera actively fixed CO2, but responded differently to the additions of nitrate and oxygen. Oxygen additions had the largest effect on community composition and carbon fixation rates, depending on the initial starting community.

Metaproteogenomic Profiling of Chemosynthetic Microbial Biofilms Reveals Metabolic Flexibility During Colonization of a Shallow-Water Gas Vent

Sushmita Patwardhan et al.

Summary: Tor Caldara is a shallow-water gas vent in the Mediterranean Sea where filamentous microbial biofilms composed of Epsilon- and Gammaproteobacteria grow on substrates exposed to CO2 and H2S venting. Metaproteogenomic analysis identified the key metabolic pathways in these biofilms, showing that they use inorganic reduced sulfur species as electron donors, CO2 as the main carbon source, and perform oxygen and nitrate respiration for energy conservation. The taxonomic composition and metabolic activity of these biofilms change during colonization, with Epsilonproteobacteria dominating in young biofilms and Gammaproteobacteria becoming prevalent in established communities.
