HABs in coastal upwelling systems: Insights from an exceptional red tide of the toxigenic dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum

E. Nogueira et al.

Summary: This study reveals the bloom development of A. minutum in the Galician Rias, indicating that climate factors and resting cysts in sediments may be key to its expansion. The study suggests that the proliferation of A. minutum may increase with climate change.

Genetic association of toxin production in the dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum

Lou Mary et al.

Summary: Dinoflagellates of the genus Alexandrium are responsible for harmful algal blooms and produce paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs). A family-based genomic association study was conducted to understand the inheritance of toxin production in Alexandrium minutum. The study identified a genomic region related to toxin production, which does not contain polymorphic sxt genes found in cyanobacteria. The expression of two sxt genes may be regulated by this genomic region. The study provides new insights into the organization of toxicity-related genes in A. minutum and proposes new candidate genes for further exploration.

Resolving cryptic species complexes in marine protists: phylogenetic haplotype networks meet global DNA metabarcoding datasets

Summary: Marine protists have traditionally been considered low in diversity and widespread, but recent studies have shown the presence of cryptic species complexes. Overcoming sampling and methodological limitations, global metabarcoding data analysis reveals geographic and ecological differentiation driving speciation among marine protists.

From the sxtA4 Gene to Saxitoxin Production: What Controls the Variability Among Alexandrium minutum and Alexandrium pacificum Strains?

Solene Geffroy et al.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between toxin production and gene structure in dinoflagellates, particularly focusing on the sxtA4 gene copy number and genome size. It was found that there is a significant correlation between the sxtA4 gene copy number and toxin content, as well as a moderate positive correlation between the sxtA4 gene copy number and genome size. Additionally, toxic and non-toxic strains exhibited differential expression and specific allelic forms of the sxtA4 gene, supporting the hypothesis of genetic determinism in toxin synthesis by A. minutum.

Quantifying the relationship between genetic diversity and population size suggests natural selection cannot explain Lewontin's Paradox

Vince Buffalo

Summary: The study revisits Lewontin's Paradox to assess the ability of current models of linked selection to explain the observed relationship between diversity and census sizes across species. The research found a significant relationship between pairwise diversity and census population sizes in the animal kingdom, with some lineages experiencing shifts in the evolutionary rate of diversity. Furthermore, species with abundant populations tend to have shorter recombination map lengths, leading to greater reductions in diversity due to linked selection.
