Children's exposure to vehicular pollution: Environmental injustice in Texas, USA

Jayajit Chakraborty

Summary: This study reveals that socially disadvantaged children in Texas are disproportionately exposed to higher levels of vehicular pollution in public school districts. These districts also have greater proportions of racial/ethnic minority, foreign-born, disabled, and socioeconomically vulnerable children. The findings emphasize the urgent need for mitigation strategies to reduce pollution exposure, especially in districts with higher proportions of socially disadvantaged students.

Demographic predictors of urinary arsenic in a low-income predominantly Hispanic pregnancy cohort in Los Angeles

Summary: In the US Hispanic pregnant women, arsenic exposure and metabolism vary significantly, with better arsenic metabolism potentially linked to being foreign-born. Maternal age may also influence arsenic metabolism during pregnancy.

Prejudice and Discrimination Toward Immigrants

Victoria M. Esses

Summary: Prejudice and discrimination towards immigrants have significant impacts on the economic, sociocultural, and political future of receiving societies and the individuals who immigrate. This article reviews the existing literature on this topic, discussing the challenges in attributing effects to immigrant status and the consequences of discrimination against immigrants. Furthermore, it presents key research questions and topics for those interested in studying intergroup relations in the age of mass migration.

Association Between Arsenic Exposure and Cardiovascular Disease

Mariya Kononenko et al.

Summary: Arsenic, a widely distributed metalloid, is implicated in adverse health effects through exposure via contaminated water and dietary intake of grains. High levels of arsenic are associated with cardiovascular disease, and there is increasing evidence suggesting a role for low-to-moderate exposure as well. The molecular mechanisms by which arsenic induces cardiovascular toxicity include epigenetic changes, increased platelet aggregation, and increased oxidative stress.

Associations between socioeconomic status and ultrafine particulate exposure in the school commute: An environmental inequality study for Toronto, Canada

Spencer Elford et al.

Summary: The study explored the exposure patterns of ultrafine particulate matter (UFP) in Toronto, Canada, revealing significant associations with socioeconomic factors such as income, government transfer dependence, immigration status, and education rates. These findings suggest unique patterns of inequality for UFPs compared to other pollutants in the Toronto-based literature, emphasizing the need for further research on UFP dosage from an environmental inequality perspective.

Blood Lead Level in a Paediatric Population of South-Eastern Spain and Associated Risk Factors

Lucia Ruiz-Tudela et al.

Summary: The blood lead levels in healthy children aged 1-16 years in southeastern Spain are low and similar to those in other developed countries. Risk factors for toxic BLL include immigrant background, low parental education levels, and iron deficiency in the diet. Toxicity of BLL was not associated with changes in the analyzed parameters.

Do fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) exposure and its attributable premature mortality differ for immigrants compared to those born in the United States?

Kelvin C. Fong et al.

Summary: This study found that immigrants in the United States are exposed to slightly higher levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) compared to US-born individuals, resulting in higher premature mortality rates. Disparities between immigrant groups were more pronounced among those originating from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Time since immigration did not significantly impact these disparities.

Particulate Matter Exposure across Latino Ethnicities

Kerry Ard et al.

Summary: This study investigates exposure to particulate matter among different Hispanic/Latino ethnic groups in the United States, finding that Dominicans and Cubans are less exposed compared to Mexicans and Puerto Ricans. The research emphasizes the importance of considering the chemical components of particles in order to better understand the risk of exposure to air pollution.

Social inequalities in the associations between urban green spaces, self-perceived health and mortality in Brussels: Results from a census-based cohort study

Lucia Rodriguez-Loureiro et al.

Summary: This study found that residential urban green spaces are associated with self-perceived health and natural cause mortality, with differences among different groups. The strongest beneficial associations were found among women with lower education levels and men with tertiary education and Belgian origin. There were no significant beneficial associations found in men from low and middle-income countries.

Multigenerational immigrant trajectories and children's unequal exposure to fine particulate matter in the US

Sara Grineski et al.

Summary: Research on fine particulate matter exposure and environmental justice reveals disparities among different racial/ethnic groups, as well as the impact of immigrant generational status on exposure. The study finds that first-generation White children born in the US face higher exposure risk, which diminishes by the second generation, while Hispanic/Latinx children do not see a significant drop in exposure levels until the third generation.

Inequalities in Exposure to Ambient Air Neurotoxicants and Disparities in Markers of Neurodevelopment in Children by Maternal Nativity Status

Faven Araya et al.

Summary: This study found disparities in exposure levels to environmental pollutants, with children of foreign-born mothers more likely to be exposed to high levels of hazardous air pollutants. Both maternal nativity status and exposure to potentially neurotoxic pollutants were associated with children's neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Environmental Exposure during Pregnancy: Influence on Prenatal Development and Early Life: A Comprehensive Review

M. Dolores Gomez-Roig et al.

Summary: Preconception and prenatal exposure to environmental contaminants can have long-term effects on health, particularly during pregnancy, neonatal period, and childhood. Substances like alcohol and smoking can lead to fetal abnormalities and developmental issues, while endocrine-disrupting chemicals and heavy metals in food may alter hormone levels and impact fetal health. The growing evidence on the negative effects of air pollutants on pregnancy highlights the importance of considering environmental exposures as a major public health issue during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
