Sampling efforts for determining fish species richness in megadiverse tropical regions

Paulo S. Pompeu et al.

Summary: Fish species richness is an important indicator of aquatic biodiversity, but inadequate sampling effort can lead to underestimation of species numbers. This study in Brazil found that an average of 53 stream reaches need to be sampled per hydrologic unit to capture 90% of fish species richness, with 100-meter reaches usually sufficient to collect 90% of local richness. While current sampling efforts in neotropical streams are adequate, complete inventories of hydrographic regions would require significantly greater resources.
