Anthocyanin-mediated arsenic tolerance in plants

Golam Jalal Ahammed et al.

Summary: Plants detoxify toxic metals by accumulating diverse metabolites, with some metabolites chelating metal ions. In addition to classical detoxification pathways involving thiol-containing compounds, secondary metabolites like anthocyanins have emerged as playing a significant role in metal detoxification. Anthocyanins, with their ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species, contribute to enhanced arsenic tolerance in plants and may offer potential for improving crop yield and food safety in arsenic polluted areas.

The flavonoid biosynthesis regulator PFG3 confers drought stress tolerance in plants by promoting flavonoid accumulation

Li Baozhu et al.

Summary: Secondary metabolite flavonoids, particularly flavonol glycosides 3 (PFG3), play a significant role in plant responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. This study investigates the involvement of PFG3 in plant flavonoid synthesis and drought/osmotic stress responses. The results show that PFG3 is a transcription factor located in the nucleus with activator activity. The expression of key flavonoid synthesis genes is reduced in PFG3-deficient mutants, leading to impaired flavonoid accumulation, especially flavonols. The mutants also exhibit increased sensitivity to osmotic and drought stresses, with reduced biomass accumulation and acclimation ability. Overall, these findings highlight the importance of PFG3 in enhancing plant tolerance to drought/osmotic stress through the regulation of flavonoid biosynthesis.

Nitrogen availability affects stem development and response to differential root-zone drought stress in Catalpa bungei

Junchen Wang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that nitrogen availability significantly affects drought responses and stem development of Catalpa bungei seedlings, with varying effects under different water treatments. Higher intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi) under vertically partial root-zone drought contributes to dominant xylem development, while constitutive activation of ABA signaling under long-term horizontally partial root-zone drought suppresses stem growth. Nitrogen addition positively influences xylem development by increasing WUEi and IAA levels under vertically partial root-zone drought conditions.
