Extended Wagner-type models and their application to the prediction of the transition from internal to external oxidation

Didier Huin et al.

Summary: Recent works have extended previous research and improved the model by removing some restrictive assumptions introduced by Wagner (1959). The results show that the new model is more in line with experimental findings, but also raise issues related to the thermodynamic equilibrium assumptions.

Oxidation Resistance in 1200°C Steam of a FeCrAl Alloy Fabricated by Three Metallurgical Processes

Andrew K. Hoffman et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of fabrication methods on the high-temperature steam oxidation performance of C26M alloys. The results indicate that different fabrication methods do not significantly affect the mass change of the alloys after steam exposure. FeCrAl alloys exhibit excellent resilience to high-temperature steam in nuclear reactor accident scenarios regardless of the fabrication method.

Enhanced Oxidation Resistance of Ultrafine-Grain Microstructure AlCoCrFeNi High Entropy Alloy

Mayank Garg et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of ultrafine-grain microstructure on the oxidation behavior of a high entropy alloy. The processed samples show significant phase transformations and enhanced surface free energy. The oxidation kinetics of the processed samples is decelerated, leading to the formation of protective oxides and Al-rich inner oxides.

Improving high-temperature oxidation behavior by modifying Al and Co content in Al-Co-Cr-Fe-Ni high-entropy alloy

Timothy Alexander Listyawan et al.

Summary: Composition modification was introduced to improve oxidation resistance. Different alloy compositions affect the dual-phase structure and the formation of oxide products. Alloys with non-equiatomic compositions exhibit better oxidation resistance due to the formation of monocrystalline Al2O3.

Diffusion of multi-principal elements through stable Cr2O3 and Al2O3 scales

Indranil Roy et al.

Summary: Understanding the oxidation mechanisms in multi-principal elements and high-entropy alloys (HEAs) is crucial for their potential applications in high-temperature oxidative environments. This study investigates the diffusion of cations and anions through stable chromium and aluminum oxides in a model HEA using atomistic simulations. The results reveal that tracer cations diffuse faster than native cations at high temperatures and the diffusion dynamics are determined by the migration energies of the diffusion pathways. The presence of tracer/impurity elements in alumina forming alloys significantly affects the growth of the oxide scales.

Examining the thermodynamic stability of mixed principal element oxides in AlCoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy by first-principles

Indranil Roy et al.

Summary: Understanding the oxidation behavior of alloys with multiple principal elements is crucial for high temperature structural applications. The stability of primary and mixed oxides in a high-entropy alloy, AlCoCrFeNi, was examined using first-principles calculations. The results show that Cr(2)O(3) and Al2O3 are the most stable oxides at various temperatures.

High oxidation resistance of AlCoCrFeNi high entropy alloy through severe shear deformation processing

Mayank Garg et al.

Summary: The current study investigates the high temperature oxidation behavior of AlCoCrFeNi high entropy alloy (HEA) following severe shear deformation. The processed specimen shows a dual phase microstructure (B2/BCC+FCC) and significant grain refinement, resulting in up to 66% reduction in oxidation kinetics compared to the as cast alloy. This study provides a sustainable solution and a new pathway for addressing material deterioration at high temperatures.

Research Article Role of Al and Cr on cyclic oxidation behavior of AlCoCrFeNi2 high entropy alloy

T. Sudeep Kumar et al.

Summary: This work studied the cyclic oxidation behavior of AlCoCrFeNi2-based High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) to understand the effect of Al and Cr. The results showed that Al1.5CoCrFeNi2 alloy with higher Al content exhibited a lower oxidation rate due to the formation of a protective Al2O3 oxide layer. On the other hand, alloys with higher Cr content formed Cr2O3 oxide layer, but it eventually spalled off, leading to further oxidation of the substrate.

Summary: A medium entropy alloy (4C-MEA) and a high entropy alloy (6C-HEA) were designed and developed through mechanical alloying, achieving nanocrystalline powders and ultra-fine crystallite sizes. Influence of microstructure and atomic-scale chemistry on the direct reduction of iron ore with hydrogen at 700 °C

Se-Ho Kim et al.

Summary: Steel, as the most important material class in terms of volume and environmental impact, is the largest single industrial greenhouse gas emission source, with 30% of global CO2 emissions coming from its primary production. Hydrogen is seen as an attractive alternative reductant due to its potential to reduce these emissions. This study provides a multi-scale structure and composition analysis of iron reduced from hematite with pure H-2, shedding light on the complex pore- and microstructure evolution during reduction and the potential for improving understanding of microscopic transport and reduction mechanisms and kinetics.
