Design-oriented stress-strain model for FRP-confined ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC)

JinJing Liao et al.

Summary: This study developed a new design-oriented stress-strain model to predict the stress-strain relationship of FRP-confined UHPC cylinders under axial compression. The model accurately estimated characteristic stresses and strains and showed good agreement with most of the test results, filling the research gap in this area.

Recent developments in Engineered/Strain-Hardening Cementitious Composites (ECC/SHCC) with high and ultra-high strength

Ji-Xiang Zhu et al.

Summary: This study reviews the recent developments in high/ultra-high-strength engineered cementitious composites (ECC) from material design to structural application. The use of high-performance synthetic fibers and dense cementitious matrices has been shown to enhance the mechanical properties and sustainability of ECC. The potential structural applications and challenges of ECC are also discussed.

Behavior of GFRP-concrete double tube composite columns

Shuai Li et al.

Summary: A novel glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) - concrete double tube composite column is proposed in this study. Through testing 20 specimens, it is found that the performance of the composite column is significantly enhanced in terms of deformability compared to traditional GFRP-confined concrete columns. Equations are developed to predict the ultimate load carrying capacity and ultimate axial strain for the proposed composite column.

Analytical model for circular high strength concrete filled steel tubes under compression

Jiong-Yi Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the lateral behavior of circular concrete filled steel tube (CFST) and existing lateral-axial strain models, and proposes a modified strain model for high strength concrete CFST to capture the interaction behavior of the steel tube and concrete accurately. This analytical model can predict the load bearing capacity, load-shortening curve, and axial strain-lateral strain relationship of CFST with both normal and high strength concrete effectively.

Mechanical behaviour of a new ECC-encased CFST column to RC beam connection under cyclic loading

Bingqing Dong et al.

Summary: The study proposed a novel ECC ring beam connection for ECC-encased CFST columns, demonstrating higher load bearing capacity, ductility, and energy dissipation compared to concrete specimens. The relative reinforcement ratio significantly influenced the failure modes of the ECC connection, while increased circumferential reinforcement ratio and joint size positively impacted the seismic behavior of the ECC connection.

Seismic rehabilitation of gravity load-designed interior RC beam-column joints using ECC-infilled steel cylinder shell

Huiya Qian et al.

Summary: An experimental study was conducted to investigate a practical method for repairing damaged interior reinforced concrete beam-column joints using engineered cementitious composite (ECC) and steel cylinder shells. Test results showed that the rehabilitation using cylinder shells improved the shear performance of the joints, with larger dimension shells having a slightly better effect. Numerical simulations indicated that proper thickness of the enlarged body of the cylinder shell ranged from 3 to 5 mm, and the correct length of the connection segment varied from 50 to 100 mm.

Compressive behavior and modelling of engineered cementitious composite (ECC) confined with LRS FRP and conventional FRP

Wan-Ying Yuan et al.

Summary: The application of external FRP jackets significantly improves the compressive strength and deformation of core ECC, with LRS FRP-confined ECC exhibiting higher ultimate deformation than conventional FRP-confined ECC. Most existing models are unable to accurately predict the compressive behavior of FRP-confined ECC, leading to the modification of dilation and axial stress-strain models to extend their application to FRP-confined ECC.

Compressive behaviour of concrete column confined with basalt textile reinforced ECC

Xuan Chen et al.

Summary: This paper presents experimental and numerical studies on the compressive behaviour of concrete columns strengthened with a composite reinforcement layer combining basalt fibre textile and Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC). The experimental results showed that columns confined with textile reinforced ECC exhibited better performance in strength and ductility than those confined with TRM. A three-dimensional finite element model was developed and validated to investigate the behaviour of concrete columns strengthened with textile reinforced ECC, and an analytical model was developed considering the spacing and number of textile layers.

Experimental Study on the Confinement of Concrete Cylinders with Large Rupture-Strain FRP Composites

Nicholas Sirach et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the influence of fiber type, fiber thickness, and concrete strength on the behavior of FRP-confined concrete, revealing that the stress-strain response is bilinear when concrete is sufficiently confined, and increasing the confining hoop stiffness can reduce strength reduction after initial concrete cracking. In addition, the minimum confinement stiffness ratio necessary to prevent strength reduction after initial concrete cracking increases as the unconfined concrete strength increases.
