Cyclic triaxial test investigation on tuffs with different water content at Badantoru Hydropower Station in Indonesia

Xudong Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the weakening effect of water on the mechanical properties and failure modes of a Hydropower station's bedrock. By conducting static and cyclic triaxial compressive tests on dry, natural, and saturated tuffs, the researchers found that increasing water content leads to a decrease in peak stress, residual stress, and elastic modulus, while increasing confining pressure results in an increase in peak stress, peak strain, and elastic modulus.

The effects of sorbing and non-sorbing gases on ultrasonic wave propagation in fractured coal

Adelina Lv et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mechanisms influencing wave propagation in fractured coals through a combination of ultrasonic transmission and XRCT imaging. The results show that the closure of fractures by matrix swelling predominantly controls the change in wave velocities, while the effect of gas adsorption on matrix properties on wave propagation is trivial. Further numerical simulations confirm the insignificant impact of changes in coal matrix properties by gas adsorption on wave velocity. The findings have implications for characterizing and monitoring coal seam gas production and gas drainage.

Evolution of excavation damaged zones in Opalinus Clay shale inferred from seismic investigations

M. Williams et al.

Summary: The text presents the results of seismic experiments conducted in two excavation damaged zones (EDZs) in Mont Terri Underground Rock Laboratory. The findings provide valuable insights into the integrity of the rock mass surrounding the excavation and its implications for mid-term safety assessments.

Characterization of coexistence of gas hydrate and free gas using sonic logging data in the Shenhu Area, South China Sea

Linsen Zhan et al.

Summary: Recent study in the South China Sea calculated the compressional- and shear-waves of sediment with coexisting gas hydrate and free gas from sonic logs. Results showed a decrease in velocities and an increase in attenuations in sediment containing both gas phases, with attenuation being more sensitive to their coexistence.

Prediction of acoustic wave velocities by incorporating effects of water saturation and effective pressure

Wenhao He et al.

Summary: Acoustic wave velocities are affected by porosity, clay fraction, effective pressure, and water saturation, with complex interactions among them. Statistical analysis and regression tools can be used to quantify the effects of these factors on acoustic wave velocities, which are crucial for interpreting rock properties accurately.
