Analytical Studies on Mode III Fracture in Flexoelectric Solids

Xinpeng Tian et al.

Summary: This paper analytically investigates the electromechanical coupling effect around the tip of a Mode III crack with consideration of both direct and converse flexoelectricity. The results show that the presence of flexoelectricity enhances the local strength of materials, leading to a decrease in both the J-integral and out-of-plane displacement in Mode III cracks, although the problem is extremely complex due to the nonuniform distribution of multiple components of strain gradients at the crack tip.

Mathematical modeling of the elastic properties of cubic crystals at small scales based on the Toupin-Mindlin anisotropic first strain gradient elasticity

Markus Lazar et al.

Summary: In this work, a mathematical modeling of the elastic properties of cubic crystals with centrosymmetry at small scales is presented using the Toupin-Mindlin anisotropic first strain gradient elasticity theory. The study derived expressions for 11 gradient-elastic constants and calculated material parameters for four representative cubic materials. The positive definiteness of the strain energy density is examined leading to necessary and sufficient conditions for the elastic and gradient-elastic constants.

A collocation mixed finite element method for the analysis of flexoelectric solids

Xinpeng Tian et al.

Summary: A collocation mixed finite element method (MFEM) is developed for direct and converse flexoelectricity in piezoelectric materials in 2D problems, considering the size-effect phenomenon in micro/nano structures. The new approach improves computational efficiency and ensures kinematic constraints between displacement and strain, providing a more accurate and efficient solution for flexoelectricity problems.
