Characteristics and treatment measures of tunnel collapse in fault fracture zone during rainfall: A case study

Longlong Chen et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the collapse characteristics and mechanism of a tunnel in Wenzhou in a fault fracture zone during rainfall. The study uses the failure theory of surrounding rock, three-dimensional discrete element numerical simulation, and in-situ deformation monitoring. The continuous erosion and expansion of rock fissures caused by water seepage are identified as the main reason for the reduction of surrounding rock stability. Treatment measures such as grouting and pipe-roofing are adopted and the reinforcement effect is evaluated through monitoring.

Local buckling characteristic of hollow ?-type steel-concrete composite support in hilly-gully region of loess tunnel

Zhichao Wang et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the effect of longitudinal pressure bias on the stability of pi-type Steel-Concrete Composite Support (SCCS) arch in a loess tunnel. Through in-situ monitoring of the Dayoushan Tunnel, the deformation and pressure from surrounding soil affected by the U-shaped terrain were analyzed. The results show that the longitudinal pressure bias has a significant impact on the out-of-plane stability of the pi-type SCCS arch.

Diseases failures characteristics and countermeasures of expressway tunnel of water-rich strata: A case study

Shuoshuo Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics and causes of tunnel failure in water-rich strata using radar scanning, drilling, and laser scanning methods. The results reveal that water-rich strata, expansive soil, and the development of surrounding rock joints are the main factors causing the failure of the Jizhao tunnel. A comprehensive set of solutions was proposed and applied successfully to address cracks, water seepage, and inverted uplift in the tunnel.

Interface shear behavior of a shaft lining concrete-high density polyethylene material under different pre-imposed normal stresses

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: Through direct shear tests, it was found that the interface between the shaft lining concrete and HDPE sandwich exhibits a clear strain-softening property under high normal loads, and the shear strength increases linearly with the increase of normal stress. Three shearing mechanisms were observed in these experiments.

Failure analysis and countermeasures of a tunnel constructed in loose granular stratum by shallow tunnelling method

Yiwen Qin et al.

Summary: In this study, the failure problems encountered in tunnels constructed by shallow tunneling method in loose granular strata were successfully addressed using a tunnel construction project on the Sichuan-Tibet 318 Highway Line in China as an example. The failure phenomena, characteristics, and modes were systematically analyzed, and corresponding construction countermeasures were proposed. The results showed that the proposed countermeasures had a remarkable effect, providing valuable references for tunnel design, construction, and disaster control in similar areas.

Analysis of large deformation of deep-buried brittle rock tunnel in strong tectonic active area based on macro and microcrack evolution

Han Bao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the large deformation of a deep-buried brittle rock tunnel in a strong tectonic active area using the Guanshan tunnel as an example. The results showed that the stress field transformation induced by the development and evolution of macro and microcracks in the diorite surrounding rock played a significant role in the large deformation. The study provides insights into analyzing large deformation in brittle rock tunnels and emphasizes the importance of considering the negative effects of microcrack development in strong tectonic active areas.

Centrifuge modelling of tunnelling below existing twin tunnels with different types of support

Qian Fang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of new tunnelling on existing tunnels using a centrifuge model test. The results show that the soil pressures and bending movements of the existing tunnels behave differently due to the new tunnel excavation. The joint deformation of the existing tunnels can be classified into translation, rotation, or a combination of both.

Centrifuge modelling of tunnelling below existing twin tunnels with different types of support

Qian Fang et al.

Summary: The study used centrifuge model tests to investigate the effects of new tunneling on existing tunnels, including surface settlements, soil pressures, bending movements, and joint behaviors. The results showed that the volume loss from new tunnel excavation was smaller than the soil volume moving into the tunnel, and the maximum settlement of the segmental lining model was larger than that of the composite lining model. Additionally, the soil pressures on different positions of the existing tunnel behaved differently, and the bending movements of the existing tunnels decreased due to new tunnel excavation.
