Failure analysis of ductile iron crankshaft in compact pickup truck diesel engine

Karim Aliakbari et al.

Summary: This study investigates the failure analysis of spheroidal graphite cast iron crankshafts in a compact pickup truck diesel engine. Premature failure occurred in the web-crankpin fillet zone of all four crankpins. Through various experiments and microscopic observations, the cause and type of failure were determined, and recommendations for preventing premature failure were provided.

Inversion of dislocation densities under mixed mode fracture

D. Fedotova et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of mixed-mode crack growth in different materials through experiments and computations. The mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity theory is used to evaluate the crack tip dislocation density behavior and the coupled effect of material plastic properties and intrinsic material length on local stress distributions. The results show that strain gradient effects can increase the stress level at the crack tip.

An evaluation of the loading condition on mixed-mode stress intensity factors for CTST specimens made of 2024-T351 aluminum alloy

Afshin Khatammanesh et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the fracture behavior of 2024-T351 aluminum alloy under various loading conditions, utilizing a new loading setup and CTST specimens. The study reveals significant coupled effects of modes II and III under mixed mode loading conditions, and demonstrates good consistency between theoretical solutions and experimental observations for different loading conditions.

A combined stress/energy-based criterion for mixed-mode fracture of laminated composites considering fiber bridging micromechanics

M. M. Mirsayar

Summary: A combined stress/energy-based criterion has been developed to predict mixed mode I/II fracture behavior in laminated composites, taking into account the effect of fiber bridging toughening. The criterion shows a higher correlation in predicting experimental data, offers a simpler computational method compared to energy-based criteria, and considers the effect of absorbed energy from micromechanical fiber bridging in the solution.

Fatigue Assessment of 2024-T351 Aluminum Alloy Under Uniaxial Cyclic Loading

Ehsan Chabouk et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fatigue life of 2024-T351 aluminum alloy through experimental and numerical methods. Mechanical properties were obtained through tensile testing, and the Manson-Coffin-Basquin equation was used to estimate fatigue life. Observing changes in the ratio of white to black pixels on the specimen surface indicated a relationship between material fatigue and specimen surface.

A review on effect of multi-directional forging/multi-axial forging on mechanical and microstructural properties of aluminum alloy

G. A. Manjunath et al.

Summary: The current paper showcases the diverse characteristic features and applications of aluminum and its alloys in material science and manufacturing processes. Multi-axial forging (MAF) or Multi-directional forging (MDF) is an effective process for obtaining fine equiaxed grains in aluminum alloys, providing grain refinement through severe plastic deformation.
