Palabos: Parallel Lattice Boltzmann Solver

Jonas Latt et al.

Summary: This article presents the scope, concepts, data structures and application programming models of the open-source Lattice Boltzmann library Palabos, which is specifically developed for applications with complex, coupled physics. Palabos offers a broad modeling framework capable of addressing various applications in the Lattice Boltzmann community, while maintaining solid computational performance. Additionally, benchmark simulations are provided as a proof of the quality of the implemented core functionalities.

Analysis of Turbulence Effects in a Patient-Specific Aorta with Aortic Valve Stenosis

Emily L. Manchester et al.

Summary: This study investigated the turbulence effects in aortic valve stenosis (AVS) using large-eddy simulation (LES) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Turbulence in AVS was found to be induced by a combination of high velocity jet impinging on the arterial wall and a dilated ascending aorta. The turbulent wall shear stress (WSS) accounted for a significant portion of the total WSS in the aorta, highlighting the importance of considering turbulence in assessing aortic hemodynamics in patients with AVS.

Vascular Mechanobiology: Homeostasis, Adaptation, and Disease

Jay D. Humphrey et al.

Summary: Cells in the vascular wall are highly sensitive to mechanical changes. In healthy arteries, mechanical forces regulate signaling and gene expression for vessel wall remodeling, but diseases often involve maladaptive remodeling and compromised homeostatic mechanisms. Disease progression is characterized by positive feedback loops that generate mechanobiological instabilities, ultimately overriding homeostatic pathways.

Patient-Specific Virtual Stent-Graft Deployment for Type B Aortic Dissection: A Pilot Study of the Impact of Stent-Graft Length

Xiaoxin Kan et al.

Summary: Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) is a standard treatment for complicated type B aortic dissection. Short stent-graft (SG) length may increase the risk of distal stent-graft-induced new entry (SINE) post-TEVAR. Virtual SG deployment simulations can help predict and reduce stress in the treated aorta, potentially aiding in selecting the most appropriate SG length for individual patients.

Numerical investigation of carotid stenosis in three-dimensional aortic-cerebral vasculature: pulsatility index, resistive index, time to peak velocity, and flow characteristics

Taehak Kang et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigated the hemodynamic correlations during the progression of carotid stenosis. The results showed that as stenosis progressed, time to peak velocity increased and was negatively correlated with PI, RI, and Re-Mean in the ipsilateral cerebral region. Additionally, PI and RI in cerebral arteries exhibited three distinct regression patterns.

Drug delivery and adhesion of maanetic nanoparticles coated nanoliposomes and microbubbles to atherosclerotic plagues under magnetic and ultrasound fields

Mojgan Alishiri et al.

Summary: The study explores the use of external fields like magnet and ultrasound to enhance targeted drug delivery by nano-microcarriers. Results show that utilizing a magnetic field and ultrasound field simultaneously can significantly increase the delivery of nanoliposomes and microbubbles to atherosclerosis plaque, providing insights for improving drug delivery efficiency.

Effects of progressive carotid stenosis on cerebral haemodynamics: aortic-cerebral 3D patient-specific simulation

Taehak Kang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of atherosclerosis in the carotid region on cerebral hemodynamics, finding that carotid stenosis led to a reduction in cerebral blood flow, which was compensated by the effective collateral capability of communicating arteries. However, at extreme stages of carotid stenosis, collateral capability became ineffective, resulting in reduced perfusion in the ipsilateral cerebral hemisphere.
