Thin Cation-Exchange Layers Enable High-Current-Density Bipolar Membrane Electrolyzers via Improved Water Transport

Sebastian Z. Oener et al.

Summary: With appropriate water dissociation catalysts, bipolar membranes can efficiently split water molecules into H+ and OH-. However, the challenge lies in transporting water through the membranes against the outward flow of hydrated ions, limiting current densities to around 0.5 A.cm(-2). Efforts are being made to improve water transport in order to achieve high-current-density operation for various applications.

Dual-phase CoP-CoTe2 nanowires as an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for bipolar membrane-assisted acid-alkaline water splitting

Isilda Amorim et al.

Summary: Electrochemical water splitting using acid-alkaline dual electrolytes can achieve an onset voltage as low as 1.13 V with the use of cobalt phosphide-cobalt ditelluride nanowires as bifunctional catalysts under reverse bias conditions. Furthermore, using a bipolar membrane under forward bias can reduce the voltages required to reach 10 and 100 mA cm(-2) to 1.01 and 1.37 V, respectively, due to electrochemical neutralization from electrolyte crossover. The bipolar membrane water electrolysis can be sustained for at least 100 hours without significant degradation.

A comprehensive two-phase proton exchange membrane fuel cell model coupled with anisotropic properties and mechanical deformation of the gas diffusion layer

Heng Zhang et al.

Summary: Adequate mechanical compression is crucial for enhancing the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells, leading to significant deformation of the gas diffusion layer and channel intrusion. A compression strain ratio of 20% is found to achieve optimal performance balancing between high contact resistance caused by low compression and high transport resistance due to high compression.
