Insights into the product quality and energy requirements for solid biofuel production: A comparison of hydrothermal carbonization, pyrolysis and torrefaction of olive tree pruning

J. Gonzalez-Arias et al.

Summary: In this study, olive tree pruning was subjected to dry (pyrolysis and torrefaction) and wet (hydrothermal carbonization) thermal treatments to produce solid biofuels. The products were evaluated in terms of yield, quality, and energy consumption. The results showed that chars produced from pyrolysis and torrefaction were coal-like with high heating values, while torrefaction had higher carbon content and energy content per kilogram of char produced, making it more profitable. The study also suggested potential improvements in energy balance by valorising gas and liquid phases in addition to the solid phase.

Hydrothermal carbonization of rape straw: Effect of reaction parameters on hydrochar and migration of AAEMs

Chen Cheng et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal carbonization improves the biomass quality and energy yield of rape straw. The properties of hydrochars produced at different temperatures and residence times were investigated. The results showed that increasing temperature had a more significant effect on hydrochar properties than residence time. The hydrochar structure was changed and became more stable after the aromatization reaction. The gasification reactivity of hydrochar was also affected, with the peak of pyrolysis and gasification shifting to a higher temperature region. Furthermore, hydrothermal carbonization efficiently reduced the content of alkali and alkaline earth metals, with the best removal condition observed at 200°C.

Co-hydrothermal carbonization of cellulose, hemicellulose, and protein with aqueous phase recirculation: Insight into the reaction mechanisms on hydrochar formation

Tonggui Liu et al.

Summary: Co-hydrothermal carbonization (Co-HTC) coupled with aqueous phase (AP) recirculation has been found to improve hydrochar production by promoting hydrochar formation and reducing oxygen content. The combination of Co-HTC and AP recirculation exhibited enhanced effects. The composition of hydrochar was mainly derived from oxygenated compounds in cellulose and hemicellulose, as well as nitrogen-containing compounds in protein. The major mechanisms for enhanced hydrochar formation during Co-HTC with AP recirculation were the Maillard reaction, catalytical effects from acids in the recycling AP, and the repolymerization or condensation of accumulated compounds in AP.

Summary: Recognition of isothermal thermodegradation of cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin is crucial for upgrading lignocellulosic biomass and producing biochar through torrefaction. The study employs a two-step model with PSO algorithm to predict the kinetics of torrefaction at different temperatures. Results show that cellulose exhibits the highest weight loss and volatile product generation, while hemicelluloses have severe weight loss at 250 degrees C, and lignin demonstrates higher thermal resistance to torrefaction. FTIR spectra indicate that CO and CO2 are the dominant gases in the torrefaction process.
