Summary: This study makes an important contribution to the field of heavy-duty fuel cell vehicles by developing a comprehensive and realistic vehicle operation model to assess the impact of energy management strategies on hydrogen economy and system lifetime. The research demonstrates that by considering a large number of realistic driving scenarios, energy management strategies can be effectively validated to achieve a robust design. Furthermore, heuristic and optimal strategies play a significant role in reducing fuel cell transients, improving system lifetime, and maintaining high hydrogen economies.
