Combining EnergyPlus and CFD to predict and optimize the passive ventilation mode of medium-sized gymnasium in subtropical regions

Weihong Guo et al.

Summary: Thermal stratification is common in large space buildings like gymnasiums, and the combined effect of wind pressure and thermal buoyancy influences natural ventilation efficiency. Using building energy modeling (BEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), this study evaluated the impact of climatic conditions and building forms on natural ventilation of medium-sized gymnasiums. The study found that thermal buoyancy plays a positive role in air change rate (ACH) and wind velocity conditions, and passive ventilation mode can be applied effectively in transition seasons of spring and autumn in subtropical regions.

A multi-objective optimization design method for gymnasium facade shading ratio integrating energy load and daylight comfort

Zhaoxiang Fan et al.

Summary: The large-scale use of curtain walls in stadiums and other public buildings can lead to glare and increased energy consumption, especially in summer. This study proposes a multi-objective facade optimization method that achieves a balance between daylight comfort and solar radiation, improving daylighting performance while avoiding glare and reducing energy burden. The research results demonstrate the importance of facade shading ratio optimization for indoor daylight environment in stadiums during the summer.

Transforming a solar-rich county to an electricity producer: Solutions to the mismatch between demand and generation

Qi Chen et al.

Summary: This study addresses the issue of mismatch in a solar-rich county transitioning into a major electricity producer. By examining a unique county in China, it is found that renewable energy cannot instantly meet 45.6% of the annual demand. However, adjusting the renewable energy profile and utilizing electrical energy storage can partially resolve this mismatch. Additionally, the seasonal mismatch can be eliminated by exploiting controllable zero-carbon energy.

Energy storage to solve the diurnal, weekly, and seasonal mismatch and achieve zero-carbon electricity consumption in buildings

Qi Chen et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a method to evaluate the mismatch between electricity consumption and renewable generation in buildings and calculates the energy storage requirements for achieving zero carbon. The study finds that while diurnal mismatch is relatively manageable, seasonal mismatch is a more complex issue. The research also highlights the importance of developing medium-to-long duration energy storage technologies and promoting cooperation between buildings for achieving zero-carbon electricity consumption.

Utilization of on-grid photovoltaic panels to offset electricity consumption of a residential ground source heat pump

Hassan Biglarian et al.

Summary: Ground source heat pump (GSHP) system is an efficient solution in the building sector to reduce energy consumption and environmental emissions, although its electricity demand is usually provided by fossil fuel resources, making it not fully renewable. By integrating photovoltaic (PV) panels, the system's sustainability can be improved, while also achieving cost-effectiveness.

Characterizing regional building energy consumption under joint climatic and socioeconomic impacts

Haiyan Duan et al.

Summary: This study tracks and analyzes the building energy consumption in 24 provincial regions of China, revealing the influence of climatic and socioeconomic conditions on energy consumption. The results show that energy consumption is high in the material preparation and operation stages of the building process, and climatic and socioeconomic conditions have a decisive impact on these differences. The findings of this research can provide more relevant considerations for the formulation of regional building energy conservation policies.

Towards carbon neutrality: The role of different paths of technological progress in mitigating China's CO2 emissions

Boqiang Lin et al.

Summary: The study shows that different paths of technological progress in different regions of China have varying impacts on CO2 emissions. Domestic innovation can decrease CO2 emissions to a certain extent, but may increase emissions in high-emission regions. Foreign technology imports cannot reduce CO2 emissions in high-emission regions, but can achieve emission reduction in low-emission regions.
