The role of biochar in the degradation of sugars during fast pyrolysis of biomass

Colin Plouffe et al.

Summary: With appropriate pretreatment, sugars can be a major product from fast pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass. However, secondary reactions of vaporized levoglucosan in the presence of untreated biochar can significantly reduce sugar yields. Changes in reactor design and operation can help minimize these reactions and increase sugar yields.

Investigation of single particle devolatilization in fluidized bed reactors by X-ray imaging techniques

Stefano Iannello et al.

Summary: A non-intrusive X-ray imaging technique was used to study the behavior of solid feedstock particles in a lab-scale fluidized bed reactor at temperatures up to 650 degrees C. The presence of oxygen affected the devolatilization time, but had no influence on volatiles release in the form of endogenous bubbles. A one-dimensional physical model was developed to predict particle location over time, but failed to describe the behavior of plastics.

The effects of char and potassium on the fast pyrolysis behaviors of biomass in an infrared-heating condition

Haodong Zhu et al.

Summary: During the solar pyrolysis of biomass, the heat transfer is restricted, leading to the exploration of co-pyrolysis reaction behaviors of biomass and char, and secondary pyrolysis reactions of biomass. The effects of char and potassium on fast pyrolysis products distribution are discussed, showing that high temperature favors volatile release and higher heating rate promotes decomposition of bio-oils into gaseous products. Char enhances secondary pyrolysis reactions while potassium increases reactivity of biomass pyrolysis.

Heterodoxy in Fast Pyrolysis of Biomass

Robert C. Brown

Summary: As the field of fast pyrolysis has matured, traditional beliefs such as excluding oxygen, producing little sugar, and yielding low-value emulsions in water have been challenged by new research approaches that involve adding oxygen, producing sugars, and fractionating bio-oil into high-value products.

Evaluating fractional pyrolysis for bio-oil speciation into holocellulose and lignin derived compounds

Hector Hernando et al.

Summary: Fractional pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass was assessed as a method to in-situ speciate bio-oil components, showing potential for extracting valuable compounds or for catalytic upgrading. Selecting operational temperatures of 350 and 700 degrees C, the fractional thermal treatment of wheat straw and pine woodchips led to reduced bio-oil yield but improved properties, with significant differences observed in the bio-oil composition obtained at the two steps.
