Residual Trapping of CO2 and Enhanced Oil Recovery in Oil-Wet Sandstone Core-A Three-Phase Pore-Scale Analysis Using NMR

Auby Baban et al.

Summary: The wetting properties of rock play a crucial role in determining the success of CO2-EOR projects and CO2 geo-sequestration. Experimental results show that oil-wet rock can store approximately 12% of CO2, while water-wet rock can store approximately 20% of CO2, and it is also more efficient in extracting oil.

Competitive adsorption characteristics based on partial pressure and adsorption mechanism of CO2/CH4 mixture in shale pores

Jingyue Sun et al.

Summary: Gas partial pressure is found to be the decisive factor in competitive adsorption behavior, and Langmuir equation is applicable for fitting adsorption isotherms in different layers. By controlling the timing and amount of CO2 injection, it is possible to enhance CH4 recovery and CO2 storage effectively.

The Impact of Wettability on Dynamic Fluid Connectivity and Flow Transport Kinetics in Porous Media

Rumbidzai A. E. Nhunduru et al.

Summary: This study explores the effects of wettability on pore-scale flow regimes and fluid connectivity in sub-surface engineering processes. The results show that wettability significantly impacts average flow kinetics and invading phase connectivity, which in turn influences flow transport resistance and displacement kinetics. Additionally, it is found that gas ganglion dynamics accelerate fluid flow transport kinetics. Maximum fluid displacement efficiency occurs at the neutrally wet state.

Shale Wettability: Data Sets, Challenges, and Outlook

Muhammad Arif et al.

Summary: This review examines recent data sets on shale wettability using contact angle measurements, identifying influencing factors and limitations associated with contact angle methods. The study concludes that shale/oil/brine systems demonstrate water-wet to strongly oil-wet behaviors, while shale/CO2/brine systems are weakly water-wet to CO2-wet, and shale/CH4/brine systems are weakly water-wet. Factors contributing to the variability in shale wettability include operating conditions, organic content, mineral matter, and thermal maturity. This review provides a concise analysis of shale wettability data and offers insights into current technology and future developments in this field.

New Structural Percolation Transition in Fractional Wet 3D-Porous Media: A Comparative μ-CT Study

Helmut Geistlinger et al.

Summary: Natural porous media exhibit spatially heterogeneous wettability, affecting multiphase flow behavior. The study uses mixed hydrophilic and hydrophobic materials to model the fractional wet porous media, observing structural percolation transitions and different trapping behaviors between glass beads and sands. Trapping efficiency changes with the percentage of hydrophobic grains, demonstrating the dominance of bypass trapping as a mechanism.
