Mechanistic insights into enhanced waste activated sludge dewaterability with Cu(II) and Cu(II)/H2O2 treatment: Radical and non-radical pathway

Xiaoping Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of copper ions and hydrogen peroxide on sludge dewatering without pH adjustment. It was found that copper ions and the combination of copper ions with hydrogen peroxide improved sludge dewatering through non-radical and radical pathways, respectively. The mechanisms involved surface charge neutralization, cytotoxicity of copper ions, hydrolysis-induced pH decline, and hydroxyl radicals produced by a Cu(II)-catalyzed Fenton-like process.

Thermal treatment of sewage sludge: A comparative review of the conversion principle, recovery methods and bioavailability-predicting of phosphorus

Ya Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper reviews methods for recovering different forms of phosphorus from solid products obtained from different sludge thermal treatment methods, as well as the bioavailability of the recovered phosphorus products. Incineration of sewage sludge is currently the most established and effective method for recovering phosphorus, while one wet chemical method has been commercialized and is expected to be further developed for industrial applications in the future. Pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonization still have research gaps, but both have the potential to recover phosphorus and should be further explored based on their principles and laboratory performance.

Hydrothermal liquefaction of Spirulina platensis in post-carbonization wastewater from sewage sludge

Yan Zheng et al.

Summary: The study investigates the potential of using wastewater from sewage sludge dewatering as a solvent to convert microalgae into biocrude. Results show higher biocrude yield in wastewater solvent compared to pure water, indicating potential for increased production. The enhancing mechanism of wastewater solvent on liquefaction is discussed, highlighting the significance of this recycling strategy for utilization of organic wastewater in sewage sludge treatment.

Conversion of cotton textile waste to clean solid fuel via surfactant-assisted hydrothermal carbonization: Mechanisms and combustion behaviors

Zhihua Xu et al.

Summary: The research successfully converted cotton textile waste into clean solid fuel using surfactants as catalysts and proposed preliminary conversion mechanisms. Different surfactants had varying effects on the transformation of hydrothermal products, with some facilitating the development of bio-oil and others more conducive to the development of pseudo-lignin, improving fuel quality and combustion behavior.

Efficient activation of persulfate by a magnetic recyclable rape straw biochar catalyst for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride in water

Hongxia Huang et al.

Summary: This study successfully synthesized a recyclable magnetic rape straw biochar (MRSB) catalyst using abandoned rape straw, which exhibited high catalytic activity for activating persulfate (PS) to degrade tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) in water and maintained good recyclability. The MRSB catalyst promoted the generation of sulfate radicals, hydroxyl radicals, and superoxide radicals in the PS system, showing a 13.24-fold higher reaction rate compared to rape straw biochar (RSB).

A review on nitrogen transformation in hydrochar during hydrothermal carbonization of biomass containing nitrogen

Lijian Leng et al.

Summary: Biomass is a renewable and sustainable resource used for the production of fuels, chemicals, and materials. The manipulation of nitrogen in biomass during processing can lead to reduced or enriched nitrogen content in the resulting hydrochar. Further research is needed to fully understand the transformation of nitrogen during hydrothermal carbonization.

Hydrothermal carbonization of microalgae biomass produced in agro-industrial effluent: Products, characterization and applications

Jackeline de Siqueira Castro et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal carbonization is a thermochemical treatment method to convert carbohydrate components of biomass into carbon-rich material. This study demonstrated the hydrothermal carbonization process of microalgae biomass from agricultural effluent, showing improved properties of the hydrochar and energy recovery. The retention time was found to be the most significant operational parameter influencing the process performance.

Wet organic waste treatment via hydrothermal processing: A critical review

Mojtaba Hedayati Marzbali et al.

Summary: This paper reviews recent literature on hydrothermal carbonization, liquefaction and supercritical water gasification of lignocellulosic biomass and algae, as well as the production and applications of hydrochar, bio-oil, and synthesis gas. It also critically examines the comprehensive review of hydrothermal treatment for wet wastes, including municipal solid waste, food waste, sewage sludge, and algae, while establishing a comparison of different treatment options. Additionally, the study delves into the role of catalysts and the synthesis of catalysts using hydrothermal treatment of biomass, and summarizes findings on modeling works and techno-economic assessments in this area for the first time.

Influence of feedwater pH on the CO2 reactivity of hydrochars. Co-carbonisation with a bituminous coal

M. F. Vega et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) is an environmentally advantageous method to pretreat biomass feedstocks. This study found that lower pH levels promoted the production of more condensed and aromatic hydrochars and affected the ash chemistry of the hydrochars. Additionally, adding hydrochar samples can decrease the reactivity of the resulting biocokes.
