Thermodynamic analysis of a novel hydrogen-electricity-heat polygeneration system based on a very high-temperature gas-cooled reactor

Hang Ni et al.

Summary: This study proposes a polygeneration system coupled with a very high-temperature gas-cooled reactor for the cascading utilization of energy. The system simultaneously outputs hydrogen, electricity, and high-temperature steam. Energy and exergy analyses reveal that the overall energy and exergy efficiencies reach 51.27% and 66.96%, respectively, when the power ratio is 1 and the share of the main steam extracted for heat supply is 0.15.

Thermodynamic analysis and optimization of the combined supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycle and organic Rankine cycle-based nuclear hydrogen production system

Qi Wang et al.

Summary: Three VHTR and Cu-Cl cycle-based nuclear hydrogen production systems were studied in this research with energy and exergy analysis method and parametric analysis based on two reactor concepts. The results showed that the thermal efficiency of SCBC-based NHP system is sensitive to the reactor inlet temperature and is less than 37% under low reactor inlet temperatures. Additionally, using ORC can improve the system's thermal and exergy efficiencies by about 0.7% to 3.7% and 1.0% to 5.3% respectively.

Thermodynamic evaluation of hydrogen and electricity cogeneration coupled with very high temperature gas-cooled reactors

Xinhe Qu et al.

Summary: This study proposes two hydrogen and electricity cogeneration schemes based on the iodine-sulfur process for a VHTR with an outlet temperature of 950 degrees C. Energy and exergy analysis show that the overall hydrogen and electricity efficiency of S1 is higher than S2, at 43.6% and 39.2% respectively. According to the analysis results, the steam generators are identified as the components with the highest exergy loss coefficient and hold the key for improving system performance.

Generation-IV reactors and nuclear hydrogen production

Sumer Sahin et al.

Summary: There are various methods and techniques for hydrogen production from different sources, with thermo-chemical methods being more efficient at higher temperatures. Research has been conducted on Generation VI nuclear reactor types for major hydrogen production methods, suggesting the development of both electric power cycle and hydrogen production based on nuclear technologies. Generation IV nuclear reactors have the potential to provide hydrogen for a global hydrogen economy, especially when integrated with thermo-chemical and electrolysis processes. High-efficiency heat exchanger designs are key technologies required for efficient heat transfer in hydrogen production.

Thermo-economic analysis and optimization of the very high temperature gas-cooled reactor-based nuclear hydrogen production system using copper-chlorine cycle

Qi Wang et al.

Summary: An improved VHTR and Cu-Cl cycle-based nuclear hydrogen production system was proposed and investigated in this study, revealing unknown thermo-economic characteristics under variable operating conditions. Analysis showed that increasing the reactor subsystem pressure ratio can enhance the system's performance, with lower efficiencies and higher costs in producing compressed hydrogen compared to generating electricity. Results also indicated the main sources of system energy losses and specific energy cost, highlighting the importance of investment costs in VHTR and Cu-Cl plant.
