Feasibility and practical limits of full decarbonization of the electricity market with renewable energy: Application to the Spanish power sector

Javier Bonilla et al.

Summary: This study proposes an AI-based approach to determine the optimal electricity mix for decarbonization in the electricity market. The case study of the Spanish electricity market demonstrates the effectiveness of this methodology in finding the optimal mix that fulfills demand coverage, minimizes costs, and curtailments. The results highlight the significant barriers to achieving a 100% renewable electricity mix.

A new approach for coupling the short- and long-term planning models to design a pathway to carbon neutrality in a coal-based power system

Artur Wyrwa et al.

Summary: The transformation towards climate-neutral energy systems is a global challenge. This paper presents a method to improve planning capabilities by combining generation expansion and short-term planning models. Through a study of the Polish power system, a pathway to carbon neutrality is designed and the possibility of reducing carbon dioxide emissions is demonstrated.

Can a fully renewable system with storage cost-effectively cover the total demand of a big scale standalone grid? Analysis of three scenarios applied to the Grand Canary Island, Spain by 2040

Cesar Berna-Escriche et al.

Summary: The extensive use of carbon-free energy sources is crucial for achieving zero CO2 emissions in electricity generation. To meet the energy demand in populated areas, renewable systems must be combined with energy storage technologies. This study focuses on Grand Canary Island and proposes a feasible solution of combining photovoltaic, wind power, pumped storage, and lithium-ion battery systems.

Use of hydrogen as a seasonal energy storage system to manage renewable power deployment in Spain by 2030

J. J. Brey

Summary: Spain has proposed a plan to reduce conventional energy sources and increase the use of renewable energy, resulting in a surplus of electrical energy in spring and summer but a deficit in autumn and winter. By deploying electrolysers to produce hydrogen from surplus energy and blending it with natural gas for use in turbines, up to 7.27 TWh of surplus renewable energy can be reused annually, avoiding 2.54 million tons of CO2 equivalent emissions.

Evaluation of a cross-border electricity interconnection: The case of Spain-France

Luis Maria Abadie et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the economics of a cross-border transmission interconnector by modeling domestic spot electricity prices as a stochastic process and studying the price gap between countries. By combining simulated price gaps with an observed data Tobit model, the study derives probability distributions of revenues, expenses, and risk measures, finding that the economics depend on domestic seasonalities and the trend of the price gap.

Review and comparison of various hydrogen production methods based on costs and life cycle impact assessment indicators

Mengdi Ji et al.

Summary: Hydrogen is a clean and renewable secondary energy source which many countries are pursuing to combat global warming. This paper provides an overview of various hydrogen production technologies, including fossil fuel or biomass-based production, electrolysis, and thermochemical cycles. While the mainstream approach involves obtaining hydrogen from natural gas and coal, electrolysis and thermochemical cycles coupled with new energy sources show considerable potential for development.

John E. T. Bistline

Summary: High temporal resolution has significant impacts on investments and costs in the power sector, with simplified temporal aggregation methods often underestimating the value of broader technological portfolios, firm low-emitting technologies, wind generation, and energy storage resources, while potentially overestimating the value of solar generation.

Unextractable fossil fuels in a 1.5 °C world

Dan Welsby et al.

Summary: Parties to the 2015 Paris Agreement have pledged to limit global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius, but a sharp decline in fossil fuel use is required to keep the temperature increase below 1.5 degrees Celsius. A global energy systems model shows that by 2050, 60% of oil and fossil methane gas, and 90% of coal must remain unextracted to stay within a 1.5 degrees Celsius carbon budget.
