Towards next generation Savonius wind turbine: Artificial intelligence in blade design trends and framework

Abdullah Al Noman et al.

Summary: The Savonius wind turbine has become a reliable solution for small-scale wind farms due to its self-starting capability, lack of reliance on wind direction, and low vibration and noise levels. However, the main technological challenge is its inferior efficiency compared to other turbines. Research has primarily focused on enhancing the power coefficient of SWT, with recent studies exploring the integration of AI into optimization methods.

Transient analysis of H-type Vertical Axis Wind Turbines using CFD

M. Maalouly et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the effect of various parameters on the start-up and transient behavior of Darrieus straight-bladed Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) and provides optimization strategies. The results show that the chord length has the most significant impact on the turbine's performance, and drag has a positive contribution to the transient performance. High-frequency incoming wind is favorable for power generation at low average wind speeds. The transient optimized turbine is more responsive and easier to control, while minimizing the inertia improves the start-up characteristics of the steady-optimized turbine.
