The Impact of Outdoor Temperatures on the Efficacy of Natural Ventilation and Smoke Exhaust Systems

Arleta Boguslawska et al.

Summary: Natural smoke control systems in staircases are widely used for protecting escape routes from smoke, but their effectiveness depends on weather conditions, especially outdoor temperatures. This study conducted real-scale experiments and found that the natural smoke exhaust system in a staircase could operate below an acceptable level of effectiveness for almost 25% of the year. The experimental results were confirmed with CFD simulations.

Computational Fluid Dynamic Study with Comfort Analysis in Large Atrium of the Angelo Hospital in Venice

Margherita Ferrucci et al.

Summary: An analysis was conducted using Computation Fluid Dynamics to improve thermal comfort in the hall of Angelo Hospital in Venice. The study considered different configurations for the air-conditioning system and solar shading devices. Results showed that a metal casing for solar shading provided significant benefits, while radiant panels only cooled the area near the walls. Increasing the number of fan coils resulted in high air speed and localized discomfort due to drafts. Lateral confinement on the north and south sides proved to be the most effective in achieving cooling in the study area.

Sustainable Smoke Extraction System for Atrium: A Numerical Study

Martin Lyubomirov Ivanov et al.

Summary: The study found that static smoke extraction is suitable for large fires in atria design, while dynamic smoke extraction is best for small fires. By conducting simulations and comparing with experiments using CFD-FDS software, a sustainable hybrid design combining the advantages of static and dynamic systems is proposed.
