Valorization of the inedible pistachio shells into nanoscale transition metal and nitrogen codoped carbon-based electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen reduction reaction

Mohsin Muhyuddin et al.

Summary: In this study, waste pistachio shells were used to fabricate FeNCs and NiNCs as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) respectively. The results showed that pyrolyzed and ball-milled FeNCs had a promising onset potential, while pyrolyzed NiNCs exhibited lower overpotential for HER. However, HF etching and acid washing had adverse effects on the performance of the electrocatalysts.

PGM-Free Oxygen-Reduction Catalyst Development for Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells: Challenges, Solutions, and Promises

Yanghua He et al.

Summary: In this Account, recent advances in synthesizing efficient PGM-free catalysts for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) were highlighted, with an emphasis on effective strategies to improve activity and stability. The formation mechanism of MN4 active sites and their correlation to catalytic properties were discussed, providing guidance for rational catalyst design. The trade-off between activity and stability was identified as a key challenge in developing efficient catalysts for PEMFCs.

Understanding the Catalytic Sites of Metal-Nitrogen-Carbon Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysts

Ming-Xi Chen et al.

Summary: Research has shown that M-N-C catalysts for PEMFCs are the most promising candidates to replace Pt-based catalysts, but the high-temperature pyrolysis process often leads to high structural heterogeneity, which hinders the identification of the catalytic active structure and further impacts the catalyst performance.

How determinant is the iron precursor ligand in Fe-N-C single-site formation and activity for oxygen reduction reaction?

Marco Mazzucato et al.

Summary: Metal-Nitrogen-Carbon (M-N-C) materials are considered as a promising alternative to Pt/C catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of O 2 in fuel cells. The research explores the role of iron precursor ligands in Fe-Nx site formation, finding that using ligands containing aromatic nitrogen rings is crucial. Site density and turnover frequency are influenced by the type of iron complex used, and the catalytic activity is highly dependent on the electrolyte type. Stability tests show higher stability in alkaline electrolyte, while the labile nature of Fe-Nx sites is observed in demanding conditions.

Recycling of waste tires by synthesizing N-doped carbon-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction

Gil-Seong Kang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method to recycle rubbers and carbon black together from waste tires, by carbonizing rubbers in the tires with the assistance of sulfonation. The N-doped catalyst with carbonized rubbers and carbon black showed superior ORR activity, comparable to a Pt/C catalyst. The results indicate that the proposed approach is an effective solution for dealing with waste tires.

Origins of peaks of graphitic and pyrrolic nitrogen in N1s X-ray photoelectron spectra of carbon materials: quaternary nitrogen, tertiary amine, or secondary amine?

Tomofumi Kato et al.

Summary: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is a powerful technique for analyzing nitrogen-doped carbon materials, but the assignment of specific nitrogen types in the materials has been questioned. This study clarified the presence of nitrogen in heptagonal and pentagonal rings, leading to ambiguous assignments of nitrogen peaks in previous works. The peak at 400.1 eV was determined to be tertiary amine nitrogen from the analysis of graphitized polyimide, challenging previous assumptions about the nitrogen content in these materials.
