Recent Progress and Future Advances on Aqueous Monovalent-Ion Batteries towards Safe and High-Power Energy Storage

Fangli Zhang et al.

Summary: Aqueous monovalent-ion batteries have advantages of fast charging capability and high power densities. Prussian blue analogues, polyanion-type compounds, and layered oxides are commonly used cathode materials with low cost and high theoretical capacity. Design strategies such as reducing free water molecules and introducing electrolyte additives have been proposed to expand the electrochemical stability window.

How do super concentrated electrolytes push the Li-ion batteries and supercapacitors beyond their thermodynamic and electrochemical limits?

Simon Sayah et al.

Summary: Increasing the energy density of energy storage devices is a key target for battery and supercapacitor research. This article focuses on the electrochemical stability window (ESW), which determines the effective energy density of the devices. The concentration of the electrolyte affects the ESW by altering the HOMO/LUMO levels and modifying the physicochemical properties of the electrolyte. The article discusses the mechanisms behind the extension of the ESW and the improved rate capabilities and stability in batteries and supercapacitors achieved through high salt concentrations.

Anticatalytic Strategies to Suppress Water Electrolysis in Aqueous Batteries

Yiming Sui et al.

Summary: Aqueous electrolytes are a promising candidate for safe and low-cost storage batteries, but the narrow electrochemical stability window of water poses challenges for the development of high-energy aqueous batteries. Electrolysis of water leads to HER and OER, causing inefficiency, short device lifespan, and safety issues. Understanding the mechanisms of HER and OER and addressing water electrolysis suppression are critical for the future advancement of aqueous battery technology.

Toward the understanding of water-in-salt electrolytes: Individual ion activities and liquid junction potentials in highly concentrated aqueous solutions

Damien Degoulange et al.

Summary: The study investigates the application of highly concentrated electrolytes in aqueous electrochemical systems, finding that the potential shift from diluted to highly concentrated electrolytes mainly comes from an increased junction potential. As the concentration increases, the activity coefficients of cations also increase, leading to higher proton activity in highly concentrated solutions.
