Effects of Bitter Melon and a Chromium Propionate Complex on Symptoms of Insulin Resistance and Type 2 Diabetes in Rat Models

Pandora E. White et al.

Summary: The study investigated the combined effects of trivalent chromium and bitter melon in high-fat-fed streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, revealing a potential nutritional antagonistic effect between the two substances. While bitter melon showed some improvement in body mass gain, blood glucose, and LDL cholesterol values, trivalent chromium did not significantly impact glucose and lipid metabolism in the experimental rats. This suggests that the combination of trivalent chromium and bitter melon may not provide additive benefits in treating insulin resistance and diabetes in this animal model.

Nuclear-Encoded lncRNA MALAT1 Epigenetically Controls Metabolic Reprogramming in HCC Cells through the Mitophagy Pathway

Yijing Zhao et al.

Summary: The study revealed that in hepatoma cells, the lncRNA MALAT1 interacts with various loci on mitochondrial DNA, leading to abnormalities in mitochondrial function and subsequently impacting tumor phenotype and pathways related to cellular mitochondria. The findings suggest a critical role of MALAT1 in regulating mitochondrial metabolism and tumor metabolism reprogramming.

Mycobacterial origin protein Rv0674 localizes into mitochondria, interacts with D-loop and regulates OXPHOS for intracellular persistence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Rikesh Kumar Dubey et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the conserved hypothetical protein Rv0674 of Mtb is involved in promoting macrophage apoptosis by physically interacting with the control region of mitochondrial DNA. This protein plays a crucial role in intracellular infection, affecting ATP synthesis, mitochondrial membrane potential, and superoxide production. The novel function of Rv0674 in mycobacterial physiology suggests potential new strategies for combating tuberculosis.

The crosstalk between mitochondrial dysfunction and endoplasmic reticulum stress promoted ATF4-mediated mitophagy induced by hexavalent chromium

Mongameli B. Dlamini et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Cr (VI) compounds induced mitophagy mediated by ATF4 through the crosstalk between ER stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, with both mitochondrial dysfunction and ER stress playing important roles in the process.

Summary: The study reviewed the concentrations of hexavalent chromium in ambient air, which exceed residential exposure screening levels. However, based on margins of exposure, current environmental exposure to Cr(VI) is considered low risk.
