Carbon sequestration and emission mitigation potential of afforestation and reforestation of unproductive territories

Isabelle Menard et al.

Summary: This study assesses the long-term carbon sequestration potential and greenhouse gas emission mitigation after implementing afforestation/reforestation strategies in the Province of Quebec. The results show that plantations without harvesting have greater carbon sequestration potential, but it takes several decades to recover from carbon losses. Both the northern and southern regions have potential for climate change mitigation through afforestation, but better data on abandoned farmlands is needed in the southern region.

Forest structure, not climate, is the primary driver of functional diversity in northeastern North America

Dominik Thom et al.

Summary: Our study fills knowledge gaps by mapping current FD distribution and analyzing FD drivers across northeastern North America. We identified temperate forests and the boreal-temperate ecotone east and northeast of the Great Lakes as FD hotspots, with forest structure explaining most of the FD distribution of tree species in northeastern North America.

Significance of the organic aerosol driven climate feedback in the boreal area

Taina Yli-Juuti et al.

Summary: Aerosol particles can cool the climate by scattering solar radiation and acting as cloud condensation nuclei. Research suggests that warmer temperatures lead to increased emissions of biogenic secondary organic aerosol and cloud condensation nuclei concentrations, creating a negative climate feedback mechanism. Direct observations using aerosol chemical composition measurements and remote sensing observations revealed a clear increase in organic aerosol loadings and cloud condensation nuclei concentration with temperature in a boreal forest environment.

Commercial afforestation can deliver effective climate change mitigation under multiple decarbonisation pathways

Eilidh J. Forster et al.

Summary: The study shows that commercial conifer forests can achieve up to 269% more greenhouse gas mitigation than semi-natural forests over 100 years. The growth rate of the forests is the most important factor affecting greenhouse gas mitigation, and typically, harvesting stands have higher mitigation effects compared to unharvested stands.

Finding common ground: Toward comparable indicators of adaptive capacity of tree species to a changing climate

Samuel Royer-Tardif et al.

Summary: Adaptive capacity is crucial for species to persist in changing environmental conditions. This study proposes a framework to quantitatively evaluate the adaptive capacity of tree species and finds significant variability among species and components. Cross-collaboration is necessary to better anticipate the impacts of climate change.
