Evaluation of single and joint toxicity of perfluorooctanoic acid and arsenite to earthworm (Eisenia fetida): A multi-biomarker approach

Zhifeng Wang et al.

Summary: This study found that the co-existence of PFOA and arsenic in soil enhanced the bioaccumulation of arsenic while reducing the bioaccumulation of PFOA. Higher exposure levels resulted in significant biomarker responses and oxidative damages. The Biomarker Response Index (BRI) showed a dose-effect relationship between biological health status and exposure levels, confirming that As(III) exhibited greater toxicity to earthworms than PFOA. The Effect Addition Index (EAI) evaluated the joint effects of the two toxicants, showing that the joint toxicity of PFOA and As(III) changed from synergism to slight antagonism with increasing exposure levels.

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance Toxicity and Human Health Review: Current State of Knowledge and Strategies for Informing Future Research

Suzanne E. Fenton et al.

Summary: Reports on the impacts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on the environment and human health have increased substantially in peer-reviewed literature. Epidemiological studies have shown associations between exposure to specific PFAS and various health effects, and further research is needed to understand differences in responses between sexes, species, and life stages. More contemporary approaches such as read-across, molecular dynamics, and protein modeling are proposed to accelerate the development of toxicity information on PFAS, as well as the need for precaution to protect human health given the known effects of certain PFAS compounds.

A review of responses of terrestrial organisms to perfluorinated compounds

Yanping Cai et al.

Summary: Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants widely distributed in the environment, with significant impact in soil environments necessitating toxicological assessment on terrestrial organisms. The effects of PFCs on soil microorganisms, plants, and earthworms mainly accelerate the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in terrestrial organisms, calling for further in-depth research on the complex soil environment.

Evaluation of the combined toxicity of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and cadmium on earthworms in soil using multi-level biomarkers

Xiaoxia Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the combined toxicity of MWCNTs and Cd on earthworms, revealing an antagonistic interaction between the two at relatively low effects. The mixture of MWCNTs and Cd led to significant changes in metabolites and activities of cytochrome P450 isoenzymes in earthworms. The toxic action mode of the mixture on earthworms was related to oxidative injury and disruptions in amino acid, purine, and pyrimidine metabolism, and the urea cycle.

Antioxidant defense system responses, lysosomal membrane stability and DNA damage in earthworms (Eisenia fetida) exposed to perfluorooctanoic acid: an integrated biomarker approach to evaluating toxicity

Zhifeng Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that PFOA can induce various adverse effects on earthworms, including growth inhibition, oxidative stress, and genotoxicity. The biomarkers of the antioxidant defense system in earthworms were sensitive for short-term PFOA biomonitoring programs, while bioindicators indicating actual damage in organisms are more suitable for long-term monitoring programs for PFOA risk assessment.
