Response of Ecosystem Health to Land Use Changes and Landscape Patterns in the Karst Mountainous Regions of Southwest China

Zhijie Wang et al.

Summary: The quantitative assessment of ecosystem health is crucial for interpreting ecological effects and formulating sustainable ecological development measures. This study focused on the karst mountainous regions in southwest China and investigated the response of ecosystem health to land use changes and landscape patterns. Results showed that the land use structure dramatically changed, with an expansion of construction land and farmland and degradation of forestland negatively impacting ecosystem health, while an increase in forestland contributed to its improvement.

Analyzing ecological environment change and associated driving factors in China based on NDVI time series data

Luguang Jiang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the changes in China's ecological environment over the past 20 years using long-term NDVI data, revealing that approximately one-third of the country has seen improvements while 10% has experienced deterioration. Provinces such as Ningxia, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Guizhou, and Guangxi have shown the most significant improvements. Forestry projects and oasis agriculture development have effectively promoted the enhancement of the ecological environment in certain areas.

Environmental determinants impacting the spatial heterogeneity of karst ecosystem services in Southwest China

Jiangbo Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the environmental determinants affecting karst ecosystem services in Southwest China using geographical detector and geographical weighted regression methodologies, revealing significant differences in determinants among diverse geomorphological types. Land use plays a dominant role in each geomorphological type, while precipitation and vegetation coverage have the largest impact area on water yield and soil loss in each geomorphological type, respectively. Terrain factors are more important for carbon sequestration at the basin scale, with land use being more influential in each geomorphological type.

The value of ecosystem services in China: A systematic review for twenty years

Wei Jiang et al.

Summary: This study examines over 3000 studies on the value of ecosystem services published in China over the past 20 years, selecting 63 articles for in-depth analysis to lay the foundation for establishing a national database of ecosystem services value. Through the database, the spatial distribution of study sites and ecosystem types, as well as the variation of ES values in different provinces of China, are illustrated. They also establish a national empirical value table and compare it with other existing value tables in the literature.

Landscape sustainability science (II): core questions and key approaches

Jianguo Wu

Summary: Landscape sustainability science (LSS) aims to understand and improve sustainability by focusing on landscape scales, while considering both local and global scales. To advance LSS, future research should emphasize the relationships among landscape pattern, ecosystem services, and human wellbeing, and integrate complementary approaches across natural and social sciences. Sustainable landscapes are essential for achieving global sustainability.

Divergent impacts of droughts on vegetation phenology and productivity in the Yungui Plateau, southwest China

Wenyan Ge et al.

Summary: The study identified divergent responses of vegetation activities to droughts in the Yungui Plateau, with significant increase in vegetation activities in the eastern plateau but nonsignificant changes in the west. Preseason droughts played a key role in determining phenological dynamics, highlighting the importance of investigating vegetation resilience to drought in future work.

Impact of land use/land cover dynamics on ecosystem service value-a case from Lake Malombe, Southern Malawi

Rodgers Makwinja et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant impacts of LULC dynamics on ESV in Lake Malombe ecosystem, with main drivers being population growth, climate change, policy conflicts, and poverty. LULC changes resulted in reduced forest cover, increased built-up and cultivated land, posing serious implications for local livelihoods.

Ecological restoration projects did not increase the value of all ecosystem services in Northeast China

Liang-Jie Wang et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of land use decisions in Northeast China from 2000 to 2015 using the latest benefit transfer method, showing changes in ESV. Wetland loss had a greater impact on ESV than forestland increase. The total ESV increased due to the expansion of fields but decreased due to decreases in wetlands, rivers and lakes, and dry farmland.
