Vegetation and water of lowland spring-wells in Po Plain (Northern Italy): ecological features and management proposals

Luca Giupponi et al.

Summary: Spring-wells in the Po Plain of Northern Italy are ecologically and historically important. However, they are threatened by urban expansion and agricultural intensification. This research examines four spring-wells from a botanical and ecological perspective, considering water chemistry as well. The plant communities in the spring-well beds have a low number of species but no exotic species, while the vegetation on the banks has a high number of species, some of which are exotic. The vegetation on the banks shows moderate disturbances compared to the surrounding corn fields. The water samples have high ammonium content, with the most polluted being spring-well B. Suggestions for protecting and enhancing the spring-wells include removing exotic species and planting native ones.

Effects of abiotic factors on plant diversity and species distribution of alpine meadow plants

Qi-peng Zhang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that abiotic factors such as slope and soil total nitrogen significantly influence plant diversity and species distribution in alpine meadows. There is a strong correlation between plant diversity and slope, total nitrogen, as well as a positive relationship between nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium levels in the soil, soil water content, and plant diversity index.

An ecological analysis of the riparian vegetation for improving the riverine ecosystem management: the case of Lombardy region (North Italy)

Paolo Fogliata et al.

Summary: This research identified different plant communities and succession models along riparian vegetation of four rivers in Lombardy, proposing vegetation management actions for conservation. It emphasized the importance of ecological control in containing exotic species and highlighted the necessity of long-term vegetation management for river ecosystems in achieving biodiversity conservation goals by 2030.
