Shorter blooms expected with longer warm periods under climate change: an example from a shallow meso-eutrophic Mediterranean lake

Gary Free et al.

Summary: Satellite data from the CCI lakes project were used to investigate the impact of climate on chlorophyll-a concentration. A curvilinear relationship between temperature and the duration of phytoplankton blooms was found. Climate change may lead to alterations in the phenological cycles of phytoplankton, resulting in shorter bloom durations in lakes with nutrient limitations.

Heatwaves and storms contribute to degraded water quality conditions in the nearshore of Lake Ontario

Kevin Blagrave et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of extreme climatic events on water quality using data from Lake Ontario. The results indicate that climate extremes have significant effects on chlorophyll a concentrations and turbidity. Heatwaves and storms are identified as important drivers of extreme water quality conditions. The study highlights the importance of incorporating climate change adaptation plans in ecosystem management strategies to preserve water quality in the nearshore regions of Lake Ontario.

Evaporative water loss of 1.42 million global lakes

Gang Zhao et al.

Summary: In recent decades, the evaporative water loss from global lake has significantly increased due to various factors. Using satellite observations and modeling tools, the study quantified the evaporation volume from 1.42 million global lakes from 1985 to 2018 and found that the long-term average lake evaporation is 1500 km(3) year(-1) with a growth rate of 3.12 km(3) year(-1). The increasing evaporation rate, decreasing lake ice coverage, and expanding lake surface area are the main contributors to this trend.

Shifting states, shifting services: Linking regime shifts to changes in ecosystem services of shallow lakes

Annette B. G. Janssen et al.

Summary: Shallow lakes can transition between stable states due to anthropogenic or natural factors, impacting the ecosystem services they provide. Different dominant groups of primary producers in these states determine the types of services supplied. The identified ecosystem services in shallow lakes are linked to various Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting the importance of considering trade-offs in conserving and restoring these ecosystems for the natural value they bring.

Total phosphorus and climate are equally important predictors of water quality in lakes

Arnab Shuvo et al.

Summary: Nutrient inputs, climate, and lake geomorphometry have significant impacts on primary production in freshwater lakes globally, with total phosphorus being a major driver. Efforts to mitigate water quality degradation need to not only focus on nutrient management, but also consider the synergistic effects of climatic factors in water quality management.

Influence of meteorological drought on environmental flows in mountain catchments

Dariusz Mlynski et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between meteorological drought and e-flow releases in eight catchments of southern Poland. The results showed a significant decreasing trend in streamflow rate in the Skawa sub-basin, while an increasing trend was observed in the Biala and Sekowka catchments of the Dunajec sub-basin. The study demonstrated the potential of SPI and PNI indices as helpful tools in water resources management and planning, particularly in predicting the impact of droughts on e-flows deficit.

Compound hot temperature and high chlorophyll extreme events in global lakes

R. Iestyn Woolway et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the univariate and compound extreme events in lakes worldwide using satellite observations, revealing that the intensity of lake heatwaves and high chlorophyll-a extremes varies across lakes and is primarily influenced by the annual range in surface water temperature and chlorophyll-a concentrations. Compound extreme events occur more frequently than assumed in most studied lakes, potentially causing more severe impacts on lake ecosystems than previously reported due to the occurrence of univariate extremes.

Lake heatwaves under climate change

R. Iestyn Woolway et al.

Summary: Research shows that lake heatwaves will become hotter and longer by the end of the twenty-first century as a result of global warming. Heatwaves in deeper lakes are longer-lasting but less intense compared to shallower lakes. These heatwaves may exacerbate the adverse effects of long-term warming in lakes, push aquatic species and ecosystems to their limits, and threaten lake biodiversity and the key ecological and economic benefits that lakes provide to society.

Nutrient Loading, Temperature and Heat Wave Effects on Nutrients, Oxygen and Metabolism in Shallow Lake Mesocosms Pre-Adapted for 11 Years

Erik Jeppesen et al.

Summary: Global changes, such as warming and population growth, impact nutrient loadings and temperatures, with global warming leading to more frequent extreme events like heat waves. Research using a shallow lake experimental mesocosm facility discovered significant effects of nutrients and temperature changes on various ecosystem variables. Nutrient levels and temperature had positive effects on ecosystem primary production and respiration, with heat waves also impacting primary production and respiration significantly.

Stratification strength and light climate explain variation in chlorophyll a at the continental scale in a European multilake survey in a heatwave summer

Daphne Donis et al.

Summary: This study collected data from 230 lakes in Europe, finding that light climate and stratification strength are the main explanatory variables for phytoplankton biomass variance. In nutrient-rich lakes, light and stratification metrics are better predictors for phytoplankton biomass.

Detecting Climate Driven Changes in Chlorophyll-a in Deep Subalpine Lakes Using Long Term Satellite Data

Gary Free et al.

Summary: Climate change has affected the temperature and mixing regime of high-value lakes in the subalpine region of Northern Italy, resulting in changes in chlorophyll-a levels. This shift may be due to increased winter temperatures, reduced winter mixing, and altered nutrient dynamics.

Detecting Climate Driven Changes in Chlorophyll-a Using High Frequency Monitoring: The Impact of the 2019 European Heatwave in Three Contrasting Aquatic Systems

Gary Free et al.

Summary: The frequency of heatwave events in Europe is increasing as a result of climate change, which has implications for water quality and ecological functioning. High frequency monitoring of chlorophyll-a levels revealed marked changes in lake ecosystems following heatwaves and storms, highlighting the importance of studying the impact of climate change on aquatic systems.
