Spatial assessment of land degradation using MEDALUS focusing on potential afforestation and reforestation areas in Ethiopia

Cholho Song et al.

Summary: Ethiopia is facing severe land degradation and desertification issues, requiring international attention and intervention for solutions. By utilizing the globally used MEDALUS approach, main drivers causing land issues can be identified to guide the formulation of restoration plans.

Assessment of drought risk for winter wheat on the Huanghuaihai Plain under climate change using an EPIC model-based approach

Yaojie Yue et al.

Summary: Climate change-induced drought negatively impacts global crop production and food security. This study quantitatively evaluates the drought risk of winter wheat in the Huang Huai Hai (HHH) Plain and identifies an increasing trend in drought risk. Furthermore, temperature increase is found to be the main factor affecting wheat drought risk.

Assessment of land degradation using machine-learning techniques: A case of declining rangelands

Saleh Yousefi et al.

Summary: Using machine learning models, this study found a pronounced downward trend in rangeland quality in the Alborz Mountains in Firozkuh County, Iran, with distances from roads and livestock density being the most strongly linked factors to degradation. The results indicate that rangelands in the study area face challenges of overgrazing and early grazing, necessitating new strategies to mitigate and prevent damages.

Major drivers of land degradation risk in Western Serbia: Current trends and future scenarios

Veljko Perovic et al.

Summary: Land degradation and desertification (LDD) is a significant ecological challenge, with climate change being a major contributor. This study in Western Serbia found that degradation processes were primarily driven by anthropogenic factors and projected critical areas to expand significantly by 2100 due to predicted climate change impacts. These findings highlight the importance of addressing anthropogenic drivers and understanding the potential future impacts of climate change on LDD.

Monitoring land sensitivity to desertification using the ESAI approach and evaluation of the key indicators: A spatio-temporal study in India

Joy Rajbanshi et al.

Summary: Desertification in India has spread from the west to the south, causing severe degradation in states like Rajasthan and Ladakh. The random forest model identifies drought resistance and erosion protection as the most important drivers of this phenomenon. Without immediate action, irreversible losses may occur on 33.76% of the country's land.
