Experimental Cyclic Response of a Novel Friction Connection for Seismic Retrofitting of RC Buildings with CLT Panels

Francesco Boggian et al.

Summary: This paper presents a retrofitting solution for RC buildings using cross-laminated timber panels and asymmetric friction connections. The authors conducted experimental tests to assess the dissipative capacity of the connectors and studied the sensitivity to design and construction details.

Timber-to-timber and steel-to-timber screw connections: Derivation of the slip modulus via beam on elastic foundation model

Yuri De Santis et al.

Summary: This paper proposes formulations for predicting the slip modulus of timber-to-timber connections and steel-to-timber connections with inclined screws and possible interlayers. It was found that connections with inclined screws have higher slip modulus and lower degradation of performance compared to connections with perpendicular screws. The slip modulus of inclined screws is limited by the weakest timber layer, and closed form expressions for prediction were derived for practical implementations.

Development and Validation of New Bouc-Wen Data-Driven Hysteresis Model for Masonry Infilled RC Frames

Stefano Sirotti et al.

Summary: A new data-driven hysteresis model for the cyclic response of infilled RC frames is proposed in this paper, combining a degrading Bouc-Wen element with a slip-lock element. The model parameters are calibrated based on an experimental data set and analytical correlation laws linking the model parameters with geometric and mechanical properties are proposed. This model shows adequate accuracy in reproducing the cyclic response of infilled frames and is suitable for dynamic and stochastic simulations with its smooth analytical hysteresis law.

Axial slip-friction connections for cross-laminated timber

Dillon Fitzgerald et al.

Summary: The research demonstrates that slip-friction connections within cross-laminated timber rocking walls can improve their seismic performance, prevent wood damage, and maintain good passive damping properties. By designing and testing the connection system, CLT structures can achieve self-centering and protection under earthquake loading.

A state-of-the-art review on passive friction dampers and their applications

Sujit Jaisee et al.

Summary: Friction type passive energy dissipation devices, particularly friction dampers, are favored for seismic fortification of engineering structures due to their simplicity, reliability, and ability to dissipate maximum energy without being significantly influenced by loading variables. Since the 1980s, numerous novel passive dry friction dampers have been developed and applied in civil engineering, with a better understanding of friction mechanisms and behaviors. Decades of research on these dampers have been highly scattered throughout the academic community, prompting the need for a systematic overview in this field to facilitate further studies and guide future research directions.
