Complex Rupture of the 2015 Mw 8.3 Illapel Earthquake and Prehistoric Events in the Central Chile Tsunami Gap

The geological response of the coast was complex and varied, influenced by nearby seismic patches. Additionally, evidence of prehistoric tsunamis suggests that these coasts have been exposed to both near and distant tsunamis.

Three thousand year paleo-tsunami history of the southern part of the Japan Trench

Giant palaeotsunami in Kiribati: Converging evidence from geology and oral history

Summary: The iconic Ho'oumi Beach site on Nuku Hiva Island in the Marquesas was excavated in the late 1950s, providing valuable insights into settlement patterns, socio-political organization, material culture, and subsistence change. Through revisiting the site, new information was obtained regarding long-distance voyaging by the Marquesans in the 13th to 14th centuries AD and the impact of marine inundation on coastal abandonment. This study also revealed the replacement of early house pavements with megalithic foundations in the late prehistoric period, along with changes in the native forest environment.

Seismic Source of the Earthquake of Camana Peru 2001 (Mw 8.2) from Joint Inversion of Geodetic and Tsunami Data

Summary: A strong earthquake of magnitude Mw 8.2 struck southern Peru on June 23, 2001, causing significant material damage and the loss of 74 lives. The earthquake generated a local tsunami, resulting in the flooding and destruction of beach resorts, causing death and missing persons. The seismic moment was calculated as 2.72 x 10(21) Nm and the fault plane near the trench has a high potential for a tsunamigenic earthquake.
