Climate and land change impacts on future managed wetland habitat: a case study from California's Central Valley

Tamara S. Wilson et al.

Summary: California's Central Valley is an important habitat for migratory waterbirds, but only 10% of the naturally occurring wetlands remain. The study predicts the future distribution and connectivity of surface water and managed wetland habitats, as well as the potential future flooded habitat for waterbirds and other wetland-dependent wildlife. The findings highlight the impact of declining water availability and climate change on habitat loss.

Precision of Headwater Stream Permanence Estimates from a Monthly Water Balance Model in the Pacific Northwest, USA

Konrad C. Hafen et al.

Summary: Stream permanence classifications are important for determining stream regulatory status in the United States. Currently, there are no models that adequately describe surface water presence for regulatory determinations. We modified the Thornthwaite monthly water balance model and evaluated its accuracy and precision using observations in the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

Wetland restoration yields dynamic nitrate responses across the Upper Mississippi river basin

Grey R. Evenson et al.

Summary: Wetland restoration has a significant impact on nitrate dynamics in the Upper Mississippi River Basin, but the actual effectiveness may be lower than previously estimated. Wetlands can mitigate nitrogen surplus basin-wide, but may not be universally effective in tiled landscapes and due to river network processing.

The Color of Rivers

John R. Gardner et al.

Summary: RiverSR database, extracted from Landsat images spanning from 1984 to 2018, reveals that 56% of rivers in the contiguous USA are dominantly yellow and 38% are dominantly green; river color shows three distinct seasonal patterns synchronized with flow regimes; one-third of rivers have experienced significant color shifts over the past 35 years, providing new insights into macrosystems ecology of rivers.

Spatial Patterns and Drivers of Nonperennial Flow Regimes in the Contiguous United States

John C. Hammond et al.

Summary: Analysis of nonperennial flow regimes in 540 U.S. Geological Survey watersheds revealed regional differences and the significant impact of aridity and human alterations on stream drying patterns. While aridity played a key role at a continental scale, unique combinations of drivers emerged at regional scales, highlighting the importance of climate change and land cover modifications in shaping future streamflow dynamics.

Large portion of USA streams lose protection with new interpretation of Clean Water Act

Kurt A. Fesenmyer et al.

Summary: The recently promulgated Navigable Waters Protection Rule has eliminated federal protection for ephemeral streams under the Clean Water Act. Regulatory agencies claim that map limitations prevent quantification of the extent of affected surface waters, but mapping efforts have allowed for basic estimation, revealing that 43-56% of stream channels in the conterminous USA are ephemeral, with half of them no longer being protected under the new rule.

The Drying Regimes of Non-Perennial Rivers and Streams

Adam N. Price et al.

Summary: The study analyzed 25,207 drying events from 1979 to 2018 using data from 894 USGS gauges, identifying different drying regimes based on hydrological characteristics. It was found that land cover/use has a greater impact on how rivers dry up compared to climate or physiographic characteristics.

Global prevalence of non-perennial rivers and streams

Mathis Loic Messager et al.

Summary: Flowing waters play a crucial role in supporting global biodiversity, biogeochemical cycles, and human societies. However, the prevalence and significance of non-perennial rivers and streams are often overlooked, contributing to the degradation of water sources and livelihoods. By analyzing global data, it was found that a significant portion of the world's rivers experience at least one day of flow cessation each year, challenging traditional river concepts and highlighting the importance of considering intermittence in river management.

Extensibility of U-Net Neural Network Model for Hydrographic Feature Extraction and Implications for Hydrologic Modeling

Lawrence Stanislawski et al.

Summary: Accurate maps of regional surface water features play a crucial role in advancing ecological, atmospheric, and land development studies. This study explores the use of deep learning to automatically extract surface water features from IfSAR data in Alaska, demonstrating the ability to derive comprehensive water feature maps over a wide area. Results show that training the ANN with about 15% of the study area is optimal for hydrographic extraction, with little additional benefit gained beyond that point. By constraining a D-8 flow-routing approach to follow U-net predictions, fully connected hydrographic networks are generated from the U-net predictions.
