A Snapshot of New Zealand's Dynamic Deformation Field From Envisat InSAR and GNSS Observations Between 2003 and 2011

Ian J. Hamling et al.

Summary: Measuring the deformation at the Earth's surface is crucial for understanding seismic hazard and volcanic unrest, as well as the effects of land movements on sea level rise. In this study, we use a combination of InSAR observations, interseismic campaign data, and continuous GNSS velocities to create a high-resolution velocity field for New Zealand. Our findings reveal significant variability in vertical rates caused by volcanic, tectonic, and anthropogenic sources. We also observe interseismic subsidence in the Kaikoura region and localized uplift of the Southern Alps.

Late Holocene coseismic uplift of the Kaikoura coast, New Zealand

Andy Howell et al.

Summary: The 2016 Kaikoura earthquake in the oblique convergence region caused multiple fault ruptures and uplift and subsidence along the coastline. By analyzing vertical deformation observations and mapping of Holocene marine terraces, possible multi-fault ruptures in the past and the contributions of crustal faults and the Hikurangi subduction interface to coastal uplift were identified.

Observations of the incipient and penultimate stages of Holocene marine terrace development

Mark E. Dickson et al.

Summary: Holocene marine terraces are important for studying past earthquakes, but erosion can remove them from the landscape, leading to incorrect estimates of earthquake magnitude and frequency. This paper presents the first field evidence of terrace erosion rates and highlights the importance of both downwear and backwear erosion processes. Case studies in New Zealand demonstrate how new terraces can be modified by downwear processes following uplift during an earthquake, and how ongoing erosion can remove parts of older terraces. The study also proposes a new conceptual model for terrace creation and destruction on soft-rock coasts.

Late Holocene sea-level changes and vertical land movements in New Zealand

Daniel J. King et al.

Summary: Coasts in tectonically active regions face varying threat levels as land subsides or uplifts relative to rising sea levels. This study focuses on New Zealand and examines the influence of ongoing land movements on sea-level change. High-resolution palaeo-sea-level reconstructions using salt-marsh sedimentary sequences can help answer questions about the interplay between sea-level change and vertical land movement at key locations.

Relative Sea Level Changes and Morphotectonic Implications Triggered by the Samos Earthquake of 30th October 2020

Niki Evelpidou et al.

Summary: On 30th October 2020, a Mw = 7.0 earthquake shook the eastern Aegean Sea near the northern coasts of Samos island, causing uplift of the whole island, infrastructure damage, and a small tsunami. Geological, geomorphological, and biological observations revealed a complex character for the uplift, with maximum vertical displacements in the northwestern part and subsidence in the southeastern part. The study validated the importance of tidal notches as markers of co-seismic events and provided insights into the complex tectonics of the area.

Impacts of earthquakes and tsunamis on marine benthic communities: A review

Juan A. Chunga-Llauce et al.

Summary: Earthquakes and tsunamis can impact marine communities by causing mortality and migration of benthic organisms, with some communities recovering quickly while others take up to three years to return to pre-disturbance states. Long-term monitoring programs in high-impact disturbance areas are important for understanding geological-scale shaping of marine communities.

A Bayesian approach to age estimation of marine terraces and implications for the history of the great Kanto earthquakes, central Japan

Junki Komori et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively evaluated the emergence ages of tectonically uplifted marine terraces in central Japan. A new method was proposed to estimate the emergence ages of the terraces using Bayesian statistics and the temporal distribution of sample ages. The results showed variations in recurrence intervals of terrace-forming earthquakes and provided valuable information for subduction zone research and hazard assessments.

Paleo-earthquake records of the Hengchun offshore structure, southern Taiwan, revealed by uplifted coral colonies

Sze-Chieh Liu et al.

Summary: The study utilized fossil coral colonies to identify co-seismic uplifts possibly caused by the proposed Hengchun offshore structure in forming the Western Hengchun Tableland. Results suggest that mud diapirism is not the primary structural mechanism in the area, and the Hengchun offshore structure may pose significant regional seismic hazard potentials in the future.

Preservation and Destruction of Holocene Marine Terraces: The Effects of Episodic Versus Gradual Relative Sea Level Change

Hironori Matsumoto et al.

Summary: Holocene marine terraces are global and provide information on past coseismic events. This study shows that relative sea level changes significantly impact terrace development, with subtle differences in scenarios leading to completely different terrace sequences. Improved understanding of Holocene terrace sequences requires higher resolution paleo RSL data and chronological data on shore platform development.
