Nd isotopic evidence for enhanced mafic weathering leading to Ordovician cooling

Christopher T. Conwell et al.

Summary: This study presents an integrated analysis of continental weathering isotopic proxy data and paleotemperature proxy measurements from carbonate rocks in the Antelope Range of central Nevada, USA. The findings suggest that an increase in mafic weathering in the Taconic mountains at approximately 463 Ma led to global cooling. The modeling of CO2 draw-down during the Ordovician indicates a decrease in volcanic degassing and an increase in mafic weathering, which halved the pCO2 levels and align with the reconstructed paleotemperatures.

Climate changes in the pre-Hirnantian Late Ordovician based on δ18Ophos studies from Estonia

Peep Mannik et al.

Summary: Conodont-based delta O-18(phos) studies from two core sections in Estonia indicate a general cooling trend in the pre-Hirnantian Late Ordovician, with variable temperature changes and multiple cooling events. Results do not show a straightforward correlation between temperature trends inferred from delta O-18(phos) measurements and changes in the delta C-13 record.

Revisiting the Permian seawater 87Sr/86Sr record: New perspectives from brachiopod proxy data and stochastic oceanic box models

Wen-qian Wang et al.

Summary: The Permian Period experienced unprecedented Earth system changes, transitioning from icehouse to greenhouse conditions and facing two biocrises associated with volcanisms. Seawater Sr isotope records can illuminate the Permian Earth system evolution, but face issues such as low resolution and potential diagenetic alteration. New research suggests that changes in hydrothermal input, rather than continental weathering intensity, may have been the primary driver of the observed variations in Permian seawater 87Sr/86Sr ratios.

New paleogeographic and degassing parameters for long-term carbon cycle models

Chloe M. Marcilly et al.

Summary: Long-term carbon cycle models play a crucial role in understanding the evolution of atmospheric CO2 levels over geological time scales. This study refines boundary conditions related to silicate weathering and carbon degassing, and evaluates the impact of these factors on the carbon cycle model. By investigating continental flooding maps and climate-sensitive indicators, the study provides insights into the changes in land area exposure and potential weathering effects over the past 520 million years. The use of arc-activity as a proxy for carbon degassing helps to bring Mesozoic model estimates closer to CO2 proxy values.

Changing inputs of continental and submarine weathering sources of Sr to the oceans during OAE 2

Lucien Nana Yobo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sources of nutrients during ocean anoxic events, proposing that massive eruptions of Large Igneous Provinces triggered the events. Results suggest that global warming associated with volcanic CO2 loading into the atmosphere increased continental weathering rates during ocean anoxic events, enhancing nutrient supplies to the oceans.
