This review discusses the synthesis, spectroscopic behavior, and applications of pyrene-bodipy dyads. The structural relationships between bodipy core substitution and the position of the pyrene moiety, and their impact on optical properties, are revisited. The energy and charge transfer pathways between the pyrene donor and bodipy acceptor are highlighted.
This review covers the most important aspects on the synthesis, spectroscopic behavior and applications of several pyrene-bodipy dyads. Structural relationships between bodipy core substitution and the position of the pyrene moiety, with their effect on the optical properties have been revisited in detail. The energy and charge transfer pathways between the pyrene donor and bodipy acceptor in bodipy-pyrene dyads have been highlighted. In most of the cases, high efficiencies on the energy transfer processes have been observed. The quantum yield of bodipy emission was governed by charge transfer and triplet excited state formation. This review highlights the importance of these constructs and serves as illustration of the different applications in energy storage, two-photon absorption devices, photon upconversion and near-infrared absorption.
